[Classes 12 (i) and 12 (ii).] In a railway vehicle wheel and axle bearing in which the wheel has a central annular lubricant chamber 17 and end recesses housing thrust collars 3, 8, a thrust washer 12 is provided between the inner collar 8 and the end face of the corresponding recess in the hub 5. The washer 12 may be fitted in a recess in the collar 8, and the latter may be integral with or fixed to a tubular sleeve surrounding and fixed to the axle 1. A thrust washer 12 may be positioned between the outer collar 3 and the hub. The outer collar 3 is screwed to an extension 2 of the axle and is locked in position by a spring catch 23 which is fixed to the collar 3 and has an hexagonal hole engaging a correspondingly shaped projection 4 on the axle end. In the periphery of each collar 3, 8, and/or washers 12, or the opposing surfaces of the hub one or more annular grooves 30 containing felt, leather, or other packing-means may be provided. Lubricant is led to the bearing-faces of the end collars through axial grooves 31 formed in the hub or in the bearing bush 28, the chamber 17 being charged through a spring ball-valve 18 which is flush with the inner end of one of the wheel arms. The chamber 17 may have radial partitions 33 and the bush 28 annular grooves 34. Holes 32 lead lubricant to the axle journal. The bearing bush 28 may be replaced by ball bearings or by flexible roller bearings.
