[Classes 31 (i) and 31 (ii).] Guillotine machines; reciprocating-punch machines &c.-T h e bottom 1, Fig. 1, of a cardboard or like box having a filling aperture 2 is embossed on its lower surface with a circular depression 1a which receives a disc closing the aperture 2 and is provided on its upper surface with a peripheral groove 1b which receives the lower edge of the wall 4 of the box. The bottoms are stamped in a single operation by the punch and die shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the movable punch 11 carrying guide-pins 12 engaging holes in the fixed die 5 which has holes 7, 8 of diameters corresponding respectively to the diameter of the aperture 2 and of the bottom 1 ; the hole 7 is formed in the fixed part 6 having a peripheral shoulder 6a corresponding to the depression 1a to be formed in the bottom 1 and a spring-pressed movable ring 9 surrounds the part 6 and has a shoulder 9a limiting its upward movement. The sheet of cardboard &c. from which the bottoms are to be formed is fed over the ring 9 and the punch 11 descends, the internal edge 15a thereof first shearing the cardboard against the internal edge 6a of the die while the ring 9 is depressed: the aperture 2 is then formed by the edge 14a of the punch co-operating with the edge 6c of the die, the depression 1a is formed by the shoulder 6a and the spring- pressed ring 16 surrounding the part 14 of the punch and the groove 1b is formed by the rib 16b of the ring 16 which is moved upwards against the springs 17. On the return movement of the punch, the cardboard is fed over the hole 8 of the die and on the next downward movement the part 18 of the punch severs the bottom from the sheet and drives it through the hole.
