The general object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved die. of this character, and a novel method of forming articles of the type referred to, by the utilization of such a' die or similar instrumentalities.
In its preferred emb blanks of sheet diment, my invention contemplates the provision of acombination die which is-well adapted to form-aperforatedcup shapedarticle such as a ribbon tbox cap, from a blank composed of paper, sheet metalor thedike.
.This die comprises an upper die member-and a- 1 lower die member, the former comprising,v ,a, punch having an outer disc-cutting member, and a :drawing or forming member .having: associated therewith means for bulging or convex,-
ing the bottom of'the'cap and bending the blank at an acute angle atthe. peripheral junction of the walls and the bottom thereon .This is ,done in order to counteract the resilientror expansive tendency of the material to resume its original shape, and thus to insure that the walls of the finished cap will' be substantially perpendicular ,to the planeof the bottomthereof. Preferably, there is also associated with the drawing member, a perforating punch for providingsaicentrally located opening in the bottomof the-cap; this punch being either formed integrally-with or securedto the drawingmember, or adapted to be independently operated asan associated .die element.

Other objects and features of novelty will be apparent from the following; specification when read in connection with the accompanyingdrawing in which certain embodiments of my invention are illustrated by way of example.

The operation of'these parts will bereadily understood. Aszthecombined upper: die mem- :ber descends, the cutting edges. 22 and.2 3 will shear aldisc'from the interposed sheet material jandthe disc :iscarried down within the cutting Disposed within the central opening in the lower die member 10 and beneath the cutting ring is a drawing ring 27. This drawing ring is of a smaller internal diameter than the cutting ring 20 and is provided with a curved drawing edge 28 at its upper end. The descent of the cutting portion of the upper die 15 is halted before-the lower edge thereof reaches the upper end of the drawing ring 27, but the central portion 30 of the upper die continues to descend and, as it moves past the drawing edge 28 of the ring 27, the central portion of the blank is forced downwardly and the peripheral portion thereof is swaged or bent upwardly to form the vertical annular walls or flanges of the cup shaped article 50, illustrated, for example, in Figure 5 of the drawing.
The inner portion of the upper die 15 continues to descend and carries the cup shaped article downwardly past the lower end of the drawing ring 27 until the bottom 51 of the cup 50 is pressed against the convex, substantially frusto-conical, central surface 32 of the insert plate 33 carried by the member 12. This plate 33 is provided with a central opening 34 surrounded by a cutting edge 35 which cooperates with the central protuberance 36 formed on the otherwise concave bottom surface 37 of the drawing plunger 30 of the upper die. It will be seen that the punch protuberance 36 serves to perforate the central portion of the bottom 51 of the cup ,50 as shown at 54.
At substantially the same time the cooperating concave and convex conical surfaces of the two die members serve to temporarily bulge the bottom 51 upwardly and form an acute angle at the peripheral junction 53 of the side walls 52 and the bottom 51. The application of this extreme stress to the'cup 5.0;,is only temporary and serves to counteract the resilience or expansive tendencies of the cup which wouldcause the walls 52 to flare outwardly instead of being perpendicular to thebottom 51.
Upon withdrawing the upper die member 15, the cup will be stripped from the lower end of the plunger 30 by means of the lower stripping edges 39 of the drawing ring 27. The plate 33 is spaced downwardly from the ring 27 and a slot 40 is provided in the lower die member 10 for the lateral or horizontal ejection of the completed cup element 50. As illustrated in Figure 1, a horizontally reciprocating ejector head 42 having a stem 43 is adapted to be actuated by suitably timed mechanism (not shown) to push the completed cup through the slot 40 and out of the press. In lieu of this mechanical ejecting arrangement, there may be provided means such as is shown in Figure 6 which comprises a conduit 45 formed in the member 10 and placed intermittently in communication with a source of compressed air. The blast of air 46 issuing from the conduit 45 will serve to discharge the completed cap 50 through the slot 40.
In Figure 4 the centrally disposed perforating punch 36" is separable from the drawing die member 30; being fitted within a drilled recess 43 therein and retained by means of the set screw 47. In this way the punch 36' may be adjustably secured with relation to the other elements of the upper die member.
A still further modification of this device is indicated in Figure 3 of the drawing, in which the punch 36 extends through the center of the upper die member 15 and is connected at its upper end with a separate actuating member (not shown) which may be suitably synchronized with the operation of the other portions of the die so as to perforate the bottom of the blank at the proper instant.
The concave portion 37 of the bottom of the drawing member 30 not only performs the crimping or bending function already described, but enables the formation of the perforating punch portion 36 upon this surface so that it does not j project so far beyond the plane of the peripheral edges of the member 30 as to distort the bottom of the blank downwardly to a too great extent during the descent of the upper die member. In fact, in some cases, the lower end of the element 36 may be disposed in the same plane as the lower peripheral edge of the member 30.
A still further variation in the arrangement may be effected by providing an opening in the lower end of the member 30 instead of the projection 36 and providing a perforating punch or plunger associated with the lower die member 10 so as to reciprocate through the central opening 34 in the plate 33.
It will be readily seen that the combination die or punch which has just been described is of simple, sturdy construction and very well adapted to form cup shaped articles of the type illustrated in Figure 5; insuring that the perforation 54 is properly centered with respect to the article and that the walls 52 will be perpendicular to the base or bottom portion 51. Of course, the die may be employed in operating upon sheet material of any variety whether of pasteboard, metal or other substances.
Further modifications and changes may be made in the embodiment illustrated and described herein without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A combination die of the class described including, in combination: an upper die comprising an outer annular cutting member, an intermediate drawing punch provided with a substantially concave bottom surface; a lower die comprising an outer annular cutting ring, an intermediate drawing ring and a convex upwardly facing surface within said drawing ring adapted to cooperate with the concave bottom surface of said punch to temporarily apply a bulging strain to the article being formed, said drawing ring being provided with lower stripping edges; means for causing the several elements of said upper die to cooperate respectively with those of the lower die; and means below said stripping edges and above said convex surface for ejecting the formed article laterally.
2. A combination die of the class described including, in combination: an upper die comprising an outer annular cutting member, an intermediate drawing punch provided with a substantially concave bottom surface, and a centrally disposed perforating projection; a lower die comprising an outer annular cutting ring, an intermediate drawing ring, and a convex upwardly facing surface within said drawing ring adapted to cooperate with the concave bottom surface of said punch to temporarily apply 'abulging strain to the article being formed,
said convex surface provided with a central perforating opening, and said drawing ring being 7 provided with lower stripping edges; means for causing the several elements of said upper die to cooperate respectively and successively with those of the lower die, in the order named; and means below said stripping edges and above said convex surface for ejecting the formed article laterally.
3. A combination die of the class described including, in combination: an upper die comprising an outer annular cutting member, an intermediate drawing punch provided with a substantially concave bottom surface, and a centrally disposed perforating punch, said cutting, drawing, and perforating members being vertically movable relatively to each other; a lower die comprising an outer annular cutting ring, an intermediate drawing ring, and a convex upwardly facing surface within said drawing ring adapted to cooperate with the concave bottom surface of said punch to temporarily apply a bulging strain to the article being formed, said drawing ring being provided with lower stripping edges, and said last named surface provided with a central perforating opening; means for causing the several elements of said upper die to cooperate respectively with those of the lower die, and means below said stripping edges and above said convex surface for ejecting the formed article laterally.

A combination die of the class described comprising, in combination: an upper die member' having an outer annular sleeve providing a disc cutting member, an intermediate drawing and shaping punch having a substantially concave bottom surface, and a centrally disposed perforating punch; a lower die member having an elevated cutting ring adapted to cooperate with said disc cutting member, a drawing ring of smaller diameter than said cutting ring, concentric therewith, and disposed below said cutting ring; a lower stripping edge on said drawing ring, a bottomplate forminga part of said lower die, disposed beneath and spaced from said drawing ring, and. provided with a convex surface adapted to cooperate with the concave surface of said upper die to temporarily apply a bulging strain to the article being formed, and a centrally located opening having cutting edges adapted to cooperate with said perforating punch; and a lateral ejector adapted to operate in the space between said drawing ring and said bottom plate.
5. A combination die as set forth in claim 1, in which the ejecting means comprises a transversely movable plunger.
