Y., a corporation of Delaware This invention has reference to drawing'apparatus and relates particularly to apparatus of the character described which is adapted for deep drawing.
Apparatus constructed in accordance with this;
invention is adapted for drawing a blank in two directions, the drawing operation in one direction being complete before the drawing operation in the other direction is commenced.
Difficulty has heretofore been experienced in' the operation of mechanism of the type described, for producing cup-shaped articles such as pots, pans, cans and other receptacles due to the required long stroke and consequent overall height of the mechanism. Where a compound die is employed, considerable friction is produced between the die members as they slide one upon the other, thus greatly increasing the power required for operating the device. As the movable mem bers of a compound die slide and telescope rela-' tively to each other so as to become extended, the most extended member has frequently been found to have inadequate support.
The primary object of this invention has been to produce a mechanism of the character described by virtue of which the aforesaid difficulties are overcome.
Another object of this invention has been to arrive at a method of producing articles of the type identified economically and on a production I A still further object of this invention has been to provide articles of the aforesaid character which when completed are presented for removal from the apparatus in an inverted position.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim; the annexed drawings and the following description setting forth in detail certain means and one mode of carrying out the invention, such disclosed means and mode illustrating, however, but one of various ways in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view of apparatus having incorporated therein the principal features of this invention, the dies being shown in open position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to that seen in Fig. l, but with the dies in the first step of operation;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to that seen in Fig. 2, but with the dies in the second step of operation;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to that seen in Fig. 3, but with the dies in the third step of operation; and
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing the dies in the final step of operation.
In order to more fully illustrate the present invention, certain elements of a press are shown and comprise a frame or base (not shown) for supporting a bed or table 8 and a pair of uprights 9.
Suitably secured to the bed is a cylindrical member H, the upper face of which is provided With an annular step I2 Which mates with a similar step on the lower face of a blanking die I3. The inner surface of the member II and the inner surface of the blanking die 13 are extensions of each other so that these elements are in effect one and continuous.
Suitably secured to the table 3 and disposed centrally of the elements H and I3 is a cylindrical male drawing die IS, the upper surface iii of which tapers or slants downwardly and outwardly.
This male drawing die is provided with a central aperture l8 (see Fig. 4) which reciprocably accommodates a redraw punch 19. For actuating the redraw punch, the same is suitably secured to a bar or rod 20, which is reciprocably accommodated by an aligned opening in the table. Suitable mechanism, not shown, may be provided for actuating the rod 20.
Annular hold-down means in the form of a ring 22 is reciprocably mounted between the cylindrical member II and the male drawing die I5 and is reciprocated by suitable means such as a pair of rods 23 which project through a pair of openings in the table 8. The upper ends of these rods engage the hold-down ring 22 and the lower ends thereof are secured to a plate 24. Suitable means, such as fluid pressure responsive means, may be provided for actuating the plate.
The upper die members, which are reciprocable between the uprights 9, are carried by the ram 30 and will now be described. Reciprocably and centrally carried by the ram is a rod 32, the lower end of which is provided with a knockout 33, the latter being accommodated in a centrally disposed aperture 34 of the ram.
Suitably secured to the lower face of the ram and located thereon by a step 36, which is similar to'the step I2, is a female die member 31. The latter is provided with an annular bore38 which is coaxial with the opening 34 and the lower end 39 of which flares outwardly.
By means of a step 4|, which is similar to step 35, the die member 31 carries a blanking punch 43. The blanking punch is provided with a central opening 44 which registers with the lower end 39 of the opening of the die member 31.
Suitable means may be provided for actuating the ram 30 and the hold-down rod 32.
Assuming the various parts in the position seen in Fig. 1, the operation thereof will nowbe described. Stock S, which is to be drawn into an article, is placed upon the blanking die l3.
As is seen in Fig. 2, the ram is then actuated and forces the blanking punch 43 downwardly so as to cut out a blank B from the stock S. 'After the blanking punch has established contact with the stock S, the hold-down ring is actuated into hold-down position, preferably by fluidpressure responsive means. During the blanking operation the knock-outis maintained flush withthe blanking edge oftheblanking punch so that the blank B is gripped or held between the knock-out and the redraw punch.
The step next following the blankingstep is seen in Fig. 3. The knock-out is maintained stationary while the remaining elements carried by the ram 30 are actuated downwardly until the blanking punch 43 pushes the hold-down ring 22 against the table 8. Since thehold-down ring is actuated by \fluid pressure responsive means, the same may be depressed and still exert an adequate hold-down force. While the upper die members are so actuated downwardly, the central portion of the blank B is held between the redraw punch l9 and the knock-rout 33, while the outer portion thereof is bent downwardly and takes the configuration of the upper and outer surface of the drawing die I5. As is shown in Fig. 3, it is to be notedthat the opening 44 of the blanking die 43 is of such diameter that it snugly accomodates the drawing die 15 and two thicknesses of the blank B. The upper surfaces of the drawing die l5 and of the redraw punch [9 are flush and are positioned above the table 8 so that when the ram is in its lowermost position, the outer edges of the blank, as seen in Fig. 3, become preferably horizontal and rest against the upper surface of the hold-down ring 22. When the second ordrawingstep is completed, the redrawing step is commenced, the various parts assuming the relationship shown in Fig. 4.
During the redrawing step the ram will be maintained stationary while the redraw punch and knock-out are actuated as contrasted with the drawing operation during which the redraw punch and the knock-out were maintained stationary while the ram was actuated. During such actuation of the redraw punch l9 by the rod 28, pressure still maintained between the redraw punch and the knock-out so that the portion of the blank which was originally gripped in Fig. 2 betweenthe redraw punch and the holddown will still be gripped thereby. As the redraw punch is actuated upwardly it forces the knock-out upwardly through the opening 38 and into the upper part of the opening 34 and causes the downwardly extending sides of the blank B, as seen in Fig. 3, to slide or be drawn between the drawing die i5 and the inner surfaces of the blanking punch 43 and the female die member 3'! until the blank is entirely disposed within the openings 34 and 33 as is seen in Fig. 4.
When the redrawing step is completed, the various elements are actuated into the position seen in Fig. 5 and the operating cycle completed. To accomplish this the fluid pressure which heretofore has urged the hold-down ring upwardly is released, the redraw punch is lowered into its original position, and the ram 30 and knock-out 33 areactuated so as to knock out the blank B of Fig. 4 which is now the completed article A of Fig. 5. It is to be noted that the article A is inverted, that is, its bottom is up so that it need not be turned over for subsequent ,drawing or redrawing steps by further devices.
From the foregoing it will be seen that during the entire process of forming the article A, the blank'B is securely gripped between the redraw punch l9 and the knock-out 33. It will also be seen that due to the downward movement of the ram and the upward movement of the redraw punch, the overall height of a device embodying this invention is reduced as compared to a device in which the entire movement is taken by the ram.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the means and the steps herein disclosed, provided those stated by the following claim or its equivalent-be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
Apparatus for drawing articles comprising a base, a blanking die and a male drawing die supported thereon, a hold-down between said dies and movable relative thereto, and a redraw punch reciprocably mounted Within said male drawing die, a movable blanking punch cooperating with said blanking die to cut a blank as the blanking punch moves in one direction with the marginal portion of the blank gripped between the blanking punch and hold-down, continued movement of said blanking die in the same direction drawing said blank over said male drawing die, a female die above said blanking punch and a knockout extendingtherethrough and cooperating with said redraw punch to grip the central portion of the blank, said redraw punch and knockout being movable in a direction opposite to the first mentioned direction to draw the blank into said female die while the blanking punch and hold-down remain stationary.
