382,375. Portable drilling, grinding, &c. machines. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., SIR W. G. and REAVELY, T. C., Scotswood Works, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Sept. 12, 1931, No. 25646. [Class 83 (iii).] A portable rotary hand tool such as a drilling or grinding machine having a reduction gear with means for attaching to one or other of the rotating members thereof a tool spindle, has the last wheel of the reduction gear mounted on a hollow shaft in axial alignment with a motor shaft, the former shaft being in permanent driving relation with the reduction gear. A pneumatic turbine-driven machine, Fig. 1, has a driving spindle 1 carrying a pinion 2 which rotates, through the integral wheels 3, 5, the wheel 6 of the hollow tool spindle 7 .arranged coaxial with the driving spindle. This drive is suitable for drilling, but to obtain the necessary high speed for a grinding wheel 13 the latter is mounted on a spindle 10 which passes through the hollow spindle 7 until its slotted end engages a transverse pin 9 in a driving socket 1a of the motor shaft, a collar 10 in conjunction with a screwed sleeve 12 and ball bearings taking the thrust ; thus the grinding wheel is driven directly by the motor.
