[Class 28 (ii).] In a last-slice holder which is automatically given angular movements to compensate for an initial taper in the piece being sliced, the angular movements are imparted by a ratchet-operated screw carried by the frame supporting the last-slice holder. As shown in plan in Fig. 2, the last-slice holder h is pivoted at h<3> to a frame e held on the usual clamp uprights b and secured by a locking-device g. The frame e is provided with a slot e<1> disposed perpendicularly'to the face of the frame. A cubical or rectangular nut k, Fig. 3, is engaged by the screw j and is guided in the slot e<1>, the nut being connected by a link l, which acts as a cover for the slot e<1>, to the holder h. The screw j is rotated by a pawl o on a spring- returned rocking-lever p which oscillates between limit stops and is actuated for the working stroke by a rod r slidable in a boss r<1> on the frame. A stop s is secured in the path of the end of the rod r, and the rod r is made telescopic with a spring action to prevent damage when the holder is restored to its parallel position and can move no farther. The angular movement of the holder is regulated by a ratchet shroud actuated by the handle u which works over and is locked to a graduated quadrant v. Tension or compression springs w prevent the holder from chattering, and springs for the same purpose may be arranged around the pivot pin h<3> or between the holder h and the frame e. Also a frictional damper may be provided for this purpose, the damper comprising a rod pivoted to the holder h and slidable in a relatively tight, split, adjustable, pivoted, stationary bush. Alternatively the bush may be toothed to engage a tooth or teeth on the rod. The link l may be connected to the end of the holder h. According to the Provisional Specification, the holder h may be angularly moved by the motion of a pendulum which reverses as the reciprocating table reverses.
