Abstract

177,020. Ashton, J. Feb. 21, 1921. Butter and cheese cutters.-In appliances for cutting cheese, butter, soap, lard, &c. in which an angularly movable cutting-wire has one end attached to a carriage moved over a curved guidebar, as described in Specification 4370/11, improved means are provided for tensioning the wire, and spring means are provided to return the carriage to position ready for the next cut. A curved arm 1 preferably of spring construction is fixed to a hollow base 3 on which the cheese is placed against a stop 6. The base is slotted to receive the wire 10, and carries a U- shaped bracket 20 to receive the mounting for the lower end of the wire. The upper and lower ends of the wire 10 are fixed as shown in Fig. 11. The lower end is fixed in a member 12, slotted to allow easy detachment of the wire and controlled by springs 23, 24 to maintain the wire in tension and to absorb the shock. The upper end of the wire 10 is detachably secured to a stem 27 slidably mounted in a housing 25 in a carriage or runner 26 supported on the bar 1. The stem 27 is carried by a screw 30 passing through a nut 31 which is knurled so that it may be rotated within the slot 32 to adjust the tension of the wire. The carriage 26 has a bifurcated upper end embracing the quadrant bar 1 and carries a roller 38 to run upon the upper edge there. A Fair of laterally projecting handles 39 on the carriage are grasped and pulled to execute the cutting of the cheese &c. A coiled spring 42 surrounding the bar 1 has one end attached to the carriage 26 and the other end attached to the top of the bar, so that when the carriage is pulled down and released the spring will return to the top. The arm 1 may be of any length.
