381,425. Vices. DENZ, J., 192, Hamerstrasse, Basle, Switzerland. Jan. 14, 1932, No. 1173. Convention date, Jan. 14, 1931. [Class 61 (ii).] In a universal vice one of the work-engaging members 6, Fig. 1, of any desired shape is interchangeably mounted on the jaw 1 of the vice by means of a universal ball-and-socket joint 6b. The jaw 1 is removably and rotatably mounted in the vice by means of its pivot pin 2, and may be locked in desired position by a screw 3 or eccentric cone 5 bearing on the part 21 of the jaw. Both work-engaging members may be so mounted on rotatable jaws. Metal sheets 7 are provided to exclude dust &c. from the joint. Fig. 2 shows a vice having a universally-mounted work-engaging member 6 mounted on the rotatable jaw 1, and a jaw 13 carried by two spindles 8, 9 connected by chain and sprocket 10, 11, 12, dust being excluded by a metal sheet 27. The spindles 8, 9 may be connected by gear wheels 16, 17, Fig. 3, and an auxiliary jaw 15a may also be provided. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the universally-mounted member 6 is carried by the rotatable jaw 1, and the jaw 13 is vertically rotatable on a pivot 32, mounted for horizontal displacement in a dove-tail guide 33, a locking pin 31 being provided. The jaw 13 has an opening for the spindle 8 which is connected with the spindle 9 by chain and sprocket or by bevel gears 20 on a shaft 21 permitting limited rotation of the jaw. Overlapping metal sheets 27 are provided to exclude dust. The application of the invention to a quick-tightening vice is also described, and protecting means for the spindles may comprise telescopic metal boxes.
