380,724. Cigarette paper. SOC. ANON. DES ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS BRAUNSTEIN FRERES, 83, Boulevard Exelmans, Paris. March 12, 1932, No. 7443. Convention date, March 12, 1931. [Class 96.] A compound of stearin, e.g. an alkali metal stearate, is added to paper pulp and the stearin liberated by oxalic acid, thus increasing the combustibility, opacity, and phability of the cigarette paper, in which the stearin may be 2-8 per cent. The acid is added until pH = 6 or is below 7 ; the oxalate formed being soluble and mainly eliminated in fabrication. In an example, to pulp in a Hollander is added hot aqueous sodium stearate solution and then oxalic acid gradually to avoid floculation, until pH = 6. Alkaline earth salts may be precipitated from spring or river water prior to use with the paper pulp or for washing or rinsing.
