[Class 31 (ii).] In a typewriter calculating-machine such as that described in Specification 363,049 wherein contacts are closed by the keys for controlling the selection and operation of punches in a card-punching machine, the contacts of the date and spacing keys 68, 69, 70, Fig. 2, are arranged at the keyboard itself and are operated directly by these keys. As shown in Fig. 1, the contacts 58, 59 controlling the numeral punches are operated from the cam-driven differential mechanism in the manner described in the prior Specification. Arranged on the bar 57 carrying these contacts are three further pairs of contacts 66, 67, Fig. 8, the upper blades of which are adapted to be depressed by the corresponding keys 68-70 through vertical rods 68aa-70aa. Normally depression of any of these three keys will cause operation of the spacing-mechanism of the card-punching machine. If however the case-shift key 109 is also depressed for printing the punctuation marks of the keys, an arm 115 carried by the key 109 depresses the lower spring blades 67 to prevent closure of any of the pairs of contacts 66, 67 and thus also the operation of the spacing-mechanism. Alternatively the key 109 may lock the lower ends of the rods 68aa-70aa which may be of a resilient character so that the keys 68-70 may be depressed without effect as regards closure of the contacts. The leads from the various contacts are connected to a plug 96 constructed as a pair of inner and outer commutator-like cylinders and insertible in a corresponding socket 79 on the punching- machine. To prevent closure of the numeral contacts 58, 59 when the totalizers are in a comma position, the totalizer-unlocking lever 29 is prevented from movement by a pin 29a so that the differential slide 17 is prevented from descending when the cam 9 rotates.
