[Class 100 (iv)] Keys.-In a type action including a key-actuated lever and a spring- returned universal bar depressible by the lever, there is provided a keytouch varying pressure device depressible by the universal bar and constantly spring-urged towards it, and a manually settable device for varying the returned or at-rest position of the pressure device with respect to the normal or at-rest position of the universal bar, so as to vary the point of contact between the universal bar and the pressure device when the bar is depressed by a key and thereby to regulate the key touch. In a type-lever action of the kind described in Specification 389,395 the key levers 15, carried by links 18, 19 operate type levers 12 through links 13, 17 and sub-lever 14, and a finger 14a overlies, but is normally spaced slightly from a universal bar 29. The bar is carried by arms 30, pivoted at 32 and operates the carriage escapement, and, by a link 40, the ink-ribbon mechanism 38. The spring 41 of the mechanism 38 acts to return the universal bar 29, against a stop, after depression by the finger 14a. The key action is returned by a spring 22. A touch regulator frame 45 is pivoted at 44 and provided with bendable contact lugs 47 underlying the arms 30 of the universal bar. The frame is drawn upwards by a spring 48 and retained by an arm 58 of a bell-crank lever 50. The springy upper end 54 of the lever 50 extends through a notched and numbered slot in a flange 56 so that it can be set to seven positions. In each position the arms 30 of the universal bar engage the lugs 45 after a different portion of their stroke and in one end position they do not engage them at all.
