Type-bar machines; power assisted typeactions; type-bar clash preventing.-A typewriter in which the type-actions 12 are operated by a common actuator or bail 33 to rock the type actions 12 counterclockwise for actuation of type bars 7 as described in 1,037,816 is provided with a clash-preventing mechanism to prevent two or more type actions 12 from being actuated simultaneously. When two or more keys 31 are depressed a respective number of type actions 12, which are pivoted about a rod 13, is connected to the bail 33 by engagement of lugs 32 on interposers 19 pivotally mounted on type actions 12. The bail 33 is prevented from counter-clockwise movement by a lever 48 whose lug 47 is interposed in the path -of its movement through link 51 and bail 53 which is actuated by the respective number of fault sensing elements 59 each co-operating with a respective end of a type action 12 and biased by a spring 61 to engage the bail 53 when the type action 12 is rocked by the bail 33. Bail 53 opposes the action of a single spring 61 but its spring 57 is weaker than the combined action of two springs 61 and thus when two or more typeactions are rocked by the bail 33, the released elements 59 rook the bail 53 to operate the lever 48.
