Abstract

340,861. Typewriters. WADE, H., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Electromatic Typewriters, Inc. ; 60, Commercial Street, Rochester, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 28, 1930, No. 6676. [Class 100 (iv).] Relay-actions.-In actions comprising a lever provided with a key-controlled cam co-operating with a driving-roller, (i) two like cams connected by a pivot are arranged on opposite sides of the lever, the arrangement causing the drive to be transmitted in the plane of the lever, and (ii) the cam may be controlled by a detent provided with a returning-spring and having lost-motion engagement with a key-lever so that the detent is normally operated by a substantial movement of the key-lever, but can be operated repeatedly without allowing the key-lever to return fully. In the mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 6, two like cams 20, 21 are arranged close to and on opposite sides of a sheetmetal lever 12 and are connected by a pivot 24 having an enlargement 25 mounted in the lever. The lever rocks on a rod 13 and is connected by a link 15 to a type-bar or other part. The cam 21 has an elongated hub 23 co-operating with a spring- urged arm 26 loosely mounted on a pivot 11 on the lever. The cam 20 has stops 32 co-operating with stops 30, 31 on a detent 29 which is secured to the pin 11 and has a finger 33 having lost-motion engagement with the forked end 35 of a key-lever 16. A returning-spring 36 normally holds the finger in contact with one side of a hole 34 in the lever. On depression of the key-lever, the stop 30 is released from one of the stops 32, the arm 26 moves the cams into engagement with the roller, and the lever is rocked, movement continuing until the other stop 32 is arrested by the stop 31. On release of the keylever, it is returned into contact with an adjustable stop 38 by a spring 37, the detent is returned by the spring 36, and the arm 26 turns the cams slightly until they are arrested by the stop 30. The lost-motion connection 33, 35 permits of substantial depression of the key-lever before the detent is operated, and in repeated operation, the key-lever need not return to the normal position, since the detent is returned independently by the spring 36.
