This invention relates to automatically operated typewriting machines, and the principal object of the invention is the provision of simple and inexpensive means for selectively controlling the operations of the machine by manual means or by means of a perforated master sheet.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a typewriting machine in which the operations may be manually controlled by the keys in the usual manner or by means of an independently operable perforated master sheet.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts that will appear from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawing is shown a transverse sectional view of so much of a typewriting machine as is 9 necessary to illustrate one possible embodiment of the invention.
Referring particularly to the drawing, a type bar 1 is pivotally mounted to swing to and from printing engagement with the platen 2 or a work 5 sheet arranged thereon. In the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, well known means are provided for actuating the type bar by power operated devices comprising a power driven roller 3. A cam 4 is pivoted on one arm of a bell crank lever 5 pivoted in the frame, the other arm of whichis operatively connected with one arm of a bell crank lever 6 by means of a link 7. The other arm'of the bell crank lever 6 is connected with a toggle lever B by means of the link 9. The lever 8 is pivoted at one end to the toggle link 10 pivoted on a fixed part and to the type bar 1 at 11. The arrangement is such that when the bell crank lever 5 is actuated to swing the lever 6, the lever 8 is actuated in a direction to break the toggle and swing the type bar into engagement with the platen.
The lever 5 is actuated by the cam 4 when the latter engages the driven roller 3 to be operated thereby. The engagement of the cam 4 with the power roller is controlled by devices arranged to be actuated manually by the key lever or automatically by means of a perforated master sheet, said key lever and master sheet devices being operable independently of each other. The cam 4 is resiliently engaged by a spring-pressed arm 12 which tends to turn it into engagement with the power driven roller or a stop 13 on a lever 14 pivoted on the bell crank 5 and normally arranged in the path of a lug 15 on the cam. When the lever 14 swings to move its stop out of the path of the lug, the arm 12 swings the cam into engagement with the power roller to be actuated thereby to swing the bell crank 5 to actuate the type bar. The lever 14 has an arm 16 which is provided with an offset projection 17 at its end which pro- 00 jects laterally through an opening in the bell crank 5 and engages the bifurcated lower end 18 of an arm 19 pivoted on the common pivot rod 21. Associated with the arm 19 is a key lever 22 also pivoted on the common pivot rod 21 and 05 having a key 23. The key lever is substantially L-shaped and extends downwardly from its pivot and is then bent forwardly so that when depressed it swings downwardly and rearwardly. The key lever is provided with a lug or projection 24 which engages and swings the arm 19 rearwardly' when depressed to swing the-lever 14 to move its stop 13 out of the path of the lug 15 on the cam to permit the arm 12 to turn it into engagement with the power driven roller to be operated thereby. The lug 24 may be so arranged on the key lever 22 as to engage the front side of the arm 19 so that the arm is actuated thereby when the key is depressed, but leaving the arm free to swing rearwardly away from the go lug and independently of the key lever. A spring 25 connects the key lever with a flxed part and resiliently retains it in normal position, and a spring 26 connects the lever 6 with a fixed part and resiliently retains said lever and the parts connected therewith in normal position. Automatic devices are also provided for actuating the arm 19 to operate the printing devices. Said devices comprise a driven master sheet roller 27 having alternate depressions and projections on its surface adapted to engage the arms 28 on a star wheel 29 arranged adjacent thereto and revolubly mounted on an arm of the bell crank lever 31. The other arm of the bell crank lever is operatively connected with the arm 19 by means of a link 32. A spring 33 connects the bell crank lever 31 with a fixed part and resiliently tends to swing the lever in a direction to move the star wheel into engagement with the master sheet roller or a master sheet 34 aro ranged thereon. Normally two adjacent arms of the star wheel engage the perforated master sheet, but when one bf said arms meets a perforation in the sheet it projects therethrough into engagement with one of the depressions in the m5 roller, which turns the star wheel and cams its pivot away from the master sheet roller and swings the lever 31 against the tension of its spring, and swings the arm 19 to engage the cam 4 with the power driven roller 3. The link 32 engages a slot in the arm 19 so that the arm swings independently of the link when actuated by the key lever. A spring 35 may be provided to resiliently retain the arm 19 in normal position in engagement with the projection 24 on the key lever.
It will be understood that the usual number of type bars and associated devices for operating them may be employed, although only one of them is illustrated herein for the sake of clearness. The operation of the master sheet roller is controlled by means of a manually operated clutch so that its operation may be stopped when desired, and the machine operated manually when addressing an envelope or filling in the name and address in the heading of a letter. During such manual operation, the arm 19 moves independently of the master sheet devices; moreover, the arm 19 moves independently of the key levers when actuated by the master sheet devices, and during such operation the key levers remain entirely at rest. 1
Although only one embodiment of the invention is shown and described herein, it will be understood that this application is intended to cover such changes or modifications as come within the spirit of the invention or scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a type bar movable into printing engagement therewith, a power driven roller, a cam movable into operative engagement with said roller for actuating said type bar, an arm for controlling the engagement of said, cam
with the power driven roller, a movable key lever having means engageable with said arm for actuating the same, and master sheet controlled devices operatively connected to said arm for actuating it independently of the key lever, the key lever being stationary when the master sheet control devices are functioning.

said link being loosely connected with said arm to permit the arm to move independently thereof when operated by the key lever and the key lever being stationary when the master sheet control devices are functioning.

The combination with a platen, of a type bar movable into printing engagement therewith, power driven means for actuating the type bar to print, an arm for controlling the operation of said power driven means, a power driven roller, a star wheel cooperating therewith, means on said power driven roller for operating the star wheel, a master sheet on the power driven roller for controlling the operation of the star wheel, a lever operated by the star wheel and on which the star wheel is mounted, a link operatively connecting said lever with said arm, said link being loosely connected at one end to permit, independent operation of the arm, a key lever, and means on the key lever loosely engaging said arm for operating the arm when the key lever is operated but permitting the arm to move independently oi the key lever when operated by said link.
