[Class 100 (iv)] [Also in Group VIII] In a machine for making records, such as perforations or printed spots or conductive marks, on statistical cards for use in systems wherein the card is divided into two halves longitudinally, each having an equal number of half-columns for the reception of records, the record-forming elements, e.g. punches, are arranged in a column whereof the elements of one half of the column represent the same data as corresponding elements in the other half of the column. The punches 9, which as shown are 12 in number, are carried by spring-raised plates 8, and are depressed to make the records on cards carried by a carriage 15 operated by escapement mechanism as described. in Specification 430,251, [Group XIX], by means of cross-bars 23 formed with ends 24, 25 adapted to operate corresponding punches in different half-columns, the end which is not required to operate being blocked at will by depression of key 80 or 92. The blocked end of the cross-bar serves as a fulcrum about which the cross-bar rocks to operate the punch on which its other end rests. The keys 80, 92 control the position of bars 50, 51, Fig. 7, formed with projections 61, 62 which can be brought under the plates 8 to prevent depression of one set of punches. The bars 50, 51 are acted on by springs which tend to move then to obstructing position and the depression of the keys 80, 92 causes one of a pair of slides 70, 72 with turned-down ends 69, 71 to operate one of two levers 66, 67 which move the bars 50, 51. As one lever is moved to cause operation of a bar 50 or 51 it is locked automatically in " blocked " position, and the other bar is at the same time released. An additional key 120 when depressed acts to release both bars 50, 51, so that all the punches are then freed, and these can then be operated to make records over the whole of the columns of the card to control a statistical system involving the use of the two half-columns. The punches 9 are in this case controlled by a series of keys 111, 12 in number, which operate lay levers 110 adapted to act upon pins 119 on the plates 8. In addition to the keys 111 the machine is fitted with eleven keys 42 for operating the levers 38 which operate the punches for perforating the half-columns. Projections 43 on the lever 38 operate the bars 20 which depress the cross-bars 23 which actuate the punches. The bars 20 are moved counter-clockwise about pivots 35 and transmit movement to the cross-bars 23 by piotal connections 21, 22. As there are only 6 perforation positions to denote eleven digits (controlled by eleven keys 42), the keys which correspond to the odd digits are adapted to cause actuation of the key corresponding to the next higher even number and also to rock the bar 20 corresponding to the No. 9 punch. Thus, as shown in Fig. 7 lever 38b actuates also lever 38, and a pin 51 actuated by lever 38b by means of a pin 151 rotates the shaft 39 on which the lever corresponding to the No. 9 punch is mounted. The keys 111 are locked automatically when the machine is changed from action by them to action by the keys 42. the locking action being operated by depression of the key 120.
