GARBELL KEY CONTROL FOR AUXILIARY PRINTING UNITS Filed Aug. 28, 1935 5 Sheets-Sheet 5 Patented Oct. 5, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE KEY CONTROL FOR AUXILIARY PRINTING UNITS Max Garbell, Chicago, 111., assignor to Victor Adding Machine Company, Chicago, 111., a corporation of Delaware Application August 28, 1935, Serial No. 38,219
5 Claims.
This invention relates to a printing unit, and is more particularly directed to improvements in the operating mechanism therefor and key means for effecting the engagement of the operating mechanism with the printing unit which has been illustrated and described in my application for Letters Patent of the United States; Serial No. 720,397, filed April 13, 1934, and serves to render the unit operable or inoperable upon the operation of the machine to which it is attached.
For illustration, the printing unit and the key means for effecting the engagement of the operating mechanism therewith is shown as attached to an adding machine with the key means r positioned in the keyboard of the machine and readily accessible for rendering the unit operable with the machine. r
I The main effect of the invention is to improve the type of unit control means illustrated and described in the above-mentioned application so that the operator of the machine may render the operating mechanism engageable with the unit upon the depression of the key therefor. positioned in the keyboard. 5
Another object is the provision of novel key means for controlling the engagement of the operating mechanism with the unit so that it will be moved for an impact against a backing member upon the operation of the machine.
A further object is the provision of novel operating mechanism normally disengaged from the printing unit and having key means coacting therewith for connecting the mechanism with the unit prior to the operating movement of the machine to which it is attached.
A still further object is the provision of novel lock means, intermediate the key means and the operating mechanism, for retaining the key means when depressed, and being engageable by the operating mechanism to release the same upon the completion of operation of the machine.
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention includes certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are set forth in appended claims, and a preferred and modified form or embodiment of which is hereinafter described with reference to the drawings which accompany and form part of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a, view in side elevation of the operating mechanism for the printing unit, showing my improved mechanism and key means for effecting a, connection between the operating mechanism and the unit.
Figure 2 is a rear view in elevation taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a side elevation similar to Figure 1, illustrating a changed position, with the key means depressed and the operating mechanism engaged with the unit.
Figure 4 is a top plan View of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the printing unit, illustrating its engagement with the operating mechanism.
Figure 6 is an enlarged detail perspective View of the lock means coacting with thekey means.
Figure '7 is a modified form of the mechanism operable by the key means for engaging the operating mechanism with the unit; and
Figure 8 is a rear View in elevation, taken substantially on the line 8 -8 of Figure 7 I The adding machine to which the invention is shown attached has 'a ribbon spool plate H] and the usual digit keys ll (one of which is shown), and the release bar I2 which is operated upon the completion of operation of the machinefor 2 releasing the digit keys to permit them to be restored to normal position. The release bar I2 is also operated manually by means of the total ported for rocking movements on a stud 22 fixed to the side wall 23 of the adding machine. The
rockable member 2| has its other leg 24 provided with a bifurcated portion 25 that is adapted to be engaged by a stud 2B fixed to an arm 2'! which is carried for rocking movements on a stud 28 fixed to the side wall 23 of the machine. This arm 21 is operatively connected to the driving mechanism of the adding machine (not shown), and intermittently engages the rockable member 2| for-actuating'the hammers as the machine is operated. l
The printing unit 29 is mounted for reciprocating movements on the ribbon spool plate [0 adjacent one side of the type bars I6 of the adding machine and is adapted to be engaged by means of anarm 30 which is fixed to a shaft 3| pivotally carried in the side wall 23 of the machine. A depending arm 32 is fixed to one end of the shaft 3| and has its lower end portion provided with a bifurcated opening 33 for connecting the arm 32 with the rockable member 2|.
To connect the depending arm 32 with the rockable member 2|, novel means is provided, which consists of an engageable arm 34 pivotally carried on the rockable member 2| by means of a pin 35, and has a spring 36 connected thereto and to the rockable member 2| for normally maintaining a tension on the engageable arm 34 to retain a roller 31 carried on the free end thereof in sliding engagement with the arcuate edge 38 of a lever 39 carried for rocking movements on a stud 40 fixed to the side wall 23 of the machine.
The lever 39 is normally retained with the arcuate edge 38 thereof depressing the engageable arm 34 by means of a spring 4| fixed theretoand to the side wall 23. The spring 4| yieldingly'retains the free end of the lever 33 in abutting relation with an outwardly turned ear 42 of a depressible key 43 positioned in the keyboard of the machine and which is adapted to be manually depressed to actuate the lever. The depressing of the key 43 causes an upward rocking movement of that portion of the lever engaging the roller 31, and permits the engageable arm 34 to rock upward under the tension of the spring 36 fixed thereto until the roller'31 enters into the bifurcated opening 33 of the depending arm 32 and serves to connect the same with the rockable 'member 2|, (Figure 3). 4
The key 43- is provided with an extending portion 44 that is adapted to engage a lock member 45 which retains the same and the lever 39, when depressed, so as to permit the roller 31 to remain in position to connect the depending arm 32 withpthe rockable member 2| until the operation 'of the machine has been completed. The lock member 45 is pivotally carried on the side wall 23 by means of a pin 46 and is constructed of two pieces, having a hook-like top member 41 and a lower member 48. The top member 4'! is provided with an inwardly-turned portion 49 that 'has an extending integral lug 52 that is adapted to engage the lower member 48 of the lock member 45 which serves as a yieldable pawl in one direction of movement of the arm 21 and as an engageable member to release the lock member 45from the depressed key 43 in the restoring movement of said arm. 7
It will be noted that the key 43 may be depressed with or independently of the total key l3 for making simultaneous impressions of the printing unit 29 and the type bars l6 of the machine, or for rendering the unit inoperable during the time the type bar impressions are'being made.
In Figures 7 and 8, a modified form is illustrated in which the connection between the depending arm 32 and the rockable member 2| is made by means of a slidably mounted roller 53 carried for sliding movements in an elongated slot opening 54 in the arm of the rockable member 2|, and guided for movements therein by means of a lever 55 having a bifurcated arcuate opening 56 which straddles the roller 53 and which serves to elevate and lower the same in the slot opening 54 for effecting its engagement with the depending arm 32. The lever 55 is engaged for rocking movements on the stud 4|! and is yieldingly urged in one direction by means of a spring 4| and engages the depressible key 43 in the same manner as that shown in Figures 1 and 3. V
.The lever 55 is provided with an inwardlyturned lug 51 that normally underlies the arm I4 of the releasing bar l2 and serves to engage to elevate the releasing bar as the key 43 is depressed. As the total key I3 is depressed, the arm M of the release bar |2 will be carried away of the roller 53 with the depending arm 32.
When the key 43 is depressed, the locking member 45 will retainthe same in its depressed position and retain the lever 55 and the release ,bar |2 in locked positionuntil the lock member 45 is tripped upon the'restoring movement of the arm 21 actuated by the driving mechanism of the machine. I
While the forms of mechanism herein shown and described are admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the forms or embodiments herein disclosed, for it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
I claim:
