This invention relates to a device for automatically printing totals and sub-totals In calculating and adding machines of the recording type, and particularly to a device for this purpose of the kind in which the tens 1 carrying levers are locked during the depression of a sub-total key.
The object of the invention is to provide a reliable locking device of simple construction, this purpose being achieved by arranging the sub-total key to act through a bellcrank lever to lock 'a pawl which is adapted to be actuated by a cam of the cam-discs'erving to disconnect the coupling wheel's, said pawl, when released by depression of the sub-total key, locking the lever controlling the couplingwheels in their position of engagement. v
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 3 is a perspective view with the several parts in the .positions assumed when the sub-total key is depressed. I A shaft 35, mounted in the frame 34 of the calculating or adding machine, adapted to be rotated, for example, by means of a crank handle 1, carries a cam disc 4, provided with a cam 32, and a second cam 33. 5 The cam32 coacts with a pivotally mounted lever 2, controlled by a sprin 11 a lug 6 on which embraces the shaft carrying the cou ling wheels 8,. and is adapted to displace sai shaft, together with the wheels 8, in order to couple the racks 9 with the pimons of the numeral wheels 10. A lever 28, controlled by a spring 31 (Fi 3) is mounted on the frame 34, one end 0 this lever being adapted to be brought within the range of movement of the cam 33, whilst the other end is normally locked by a bell-crank lever 36, connected with the sub-total key 39 by means of a rod 37 and a spring-controlled bellcrank lever 38. The lever 28 carries a lug 40 adapted to be broughtinto engagement with the lever 2 in order to lock this latter in a determined position. The trans er levers 17 for the tens are provided, in the usual manner, with lugs 20, and are adapted.

Within reach of the movement of the transfer-levers 17 is arranged a locking member, such as a rail 14, which is normally held, by the action of a spring 42, in such a position that it does not interfere with the rocking movement of the said levers 17. The total key 41 is rovided with a sloping cam surface 13, w ich comes in contact with the rail 14 when the key is depressed, and displaces said rail, against the action of its spring 42 in such a way as to check the rocking movement of the levers 17. This position of the various parts is represented in Fig. 2; in the said racks 9 at their ends are provided, in the well known way, with type carriers of conventional form, the types of which are operated by means of pressure hammers in the well known manner; the type carriers and pressure hammers have been omitted from the drawing for the sake of clearness. The values setup in the printing mechanism are imprinted upon a sheet of paper supported upon a printing platen of recognized form, these elements also not being illustrated in the drawing. The said type carriers, pressure hammers, and printing platen form no part of the present invention.
The operation of the device is, briefly, as follows When-.the calculating operation is terminated and the numeral wheels indicate the final result-for instance 12, as shown in the drawing-the key 41 is then depressed, so that the variousparts occupy the position shown in Fig. 2; that is to say, the lugs 20 now act as stops for the lugs 19 of the numeral wheels 10. If the handle 1 be now turned, to operate the machine, the coupling wheels 8 are brought into operation through the combined action of the cam 32 and lever 2, so that the racks 9 are connected with the pinions of the wheels 10. At the instant the coupling is effected, the racks 9 move back, under the influence of the springs 18, so that, in reality, theresult,"12 is taken .out of the machine that is to say, the wheels 10 run back until their'lugs 19 strike against the" now stationary lugs 20 of the lever 17. As soon as the lever 2 again comes out of. en
wheels 8 are thereby again disengaged, the racks 9 are returned to their original position, by any suitable means, against the action of the springs 18, the wheels 10 remaining set at zero. As soon as the handle has completed a full turn, the key 41 rises automatically, thus causing the various parts to resume the position shown in Fig. 1, ready for the next calculating operation.
If a sub-total ds to be printed, the key 39 is depressed, whereupon, by means of interengaging lugs on the keys 39 and 41 (see Fig. 1) thekey 41 is depressed, and by means of cam 13 the rail 14 is brought into the position shown in Fig. 2,. so that the transfer levers 17 for the tens again. serve as fixed stops for the lugs 19 of the rollers '10. At
the same time, the key 39 acts on the hellcrank lever 38, so that, through the agency of the rod 37, the bell-crank lever 36 is turned on its pivot and releases the end 29 of the lever 28, which then moves down ward under the actionof its spring 31, its lug 4O preventing the retraction of the lever 2, previously swung out by the cam 32, The
consequence is that the value 12, now present in the machine, is first cancelled by the return movement of the racks 9 and then brought back into the original position in the machine, by the movement of the racks 9. On continuing to turn the'handle 1, the cam 33 is finally brought into position underneath the lever 28, thereby lifting the latter against the action of its spring 31, so'that the lever 2 is now able to swing back again,
and the bell-crank lever 36 can again engage over the free end 29 of the lever 28 on the ascent of the key 39.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:--
i In a calculating machine the combination of numeral-wheels, tens carrying levers controlling said numeral-wheels, operating racks, coupling wheels normally disconnected from said numeral-wheels, a pivoted lever operatively connected with said coupling wheels, a cam-disk adapted to operate said pivoted lever to shift said coupling wheels into operative connection with said numeral- -wheels, a locking lever arranged to lock said pivoted lever against operation to disengage said coupling wheels from said numeral wheels, at de ressible sub-total key, means for locking sai' carrying levers in fixed position upon, dc ression of said key, a retaining bell-crani lever for normally maintaining said locking lever in an inoperativej posisignature. 1
