[Class 100 (i).] Associating-apparatus.-Sheets printed in an intaglio or offset printing-machine are associated with newspapers or other sheets printed on a fast-running machine such as a letterpress machine running at two or more times as fast as the intaglio-machine, by cutting the intaglio sheets from two or more intaglio-printed webs and forwarding them to an associating-cylinder so that a sheet from one intaglio web is associated with one letterpress sheet and a sheet from the second intaglio web is associated with the next succeeding letterpress sheet and so on. In one arrangement for inserting half-breadth intaglio sheets into a newspaper, the intaglio-printed web is originally twice the width of the insert and is slit centrally at the middle of the folding-former 3 into two parts 4, 11. The part 4 is cut into sheets by cylinders 5, 6 and each sheet is forwarded by rollers 7, 8 to the associating-cylinder 2 where it is associated with one of the letterpress sheets. The web 11 is similarly cut by cylinders 12, 13 and the sheets forwarded by rollers 9, 10 to the cylinder 2, the length of the path of the web being such that the front edge of each sheet cut therefrom arrives at the cylinder 2 in register with the front edge of the letterpress sheet succeeding that associated with the web 4. If the intaglio inserts are to be the same width as the newspaper, the intaglio web is double the width of each insert and is slit centrally of the two folding-formers 3, 18 into two parts 4, 11<1> which are out and associated as before. The associated products are folded and delivered by cylinders 14, 15 in the usual way. If the two webs 4, 11 and also the corresponding letterpress sheets contain different matter, an additional folding and delivery apparatus 16, 17 is provided for dealing with the two sets of products. Further, the letterpress sheets may be collected on a cylinder 19 before the associating operation and the forwarding rollers 7 .. 10 may be similarly adapted to collect the intaglio sheets before feeding them to the cylinder 2.
