Description

0. WILHELM Dec. 23, 1930.
ROTARY PRINTING MACHINE FOR COMBINED INTAGLIO AND RELIEF PRINTING Filed Aug. 25, 1928 Patented Dec. 23, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE OTTMAR WILHELM, OF AUGSBURG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM MASCHHQ'EN- FABRIK AUGSBURG-NUERNBERG, AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, OF AUGSBURG, GERMANY,
.A CORPORATION OF GERMANY ROTARY PRINTING MACHINE FOR COMBINED INTAGLIO AND RELIEF PRINTING Application filed August 23, 1928, Serial No. 301,535, and in Germany August 24, 1927.
My invention relates to rotary printing machines, and more particularly to machines of this kind which serve for combined intaglio and relief printing.
In the heretofore known rotary printing machines for combined intaglio and relief printing in a single course of work 011 sheets of varying size the paper-Webs which are printed upon by the intaglio printing device are cut up in transverse direction into several sheets by means of a cutting mechanism and subsequently relief printing is applied to said sheets.
According to this inventionjhe rotary printing machine for combined intaglio and relief printing is so constructed that the collecting cylinder of the delivery is con nected in such a manner with the device serving for relief printing that it may alternatively act as a collecting cylinder in connection with intaglio printing or as a feed cylinder serving for forwarding out 01f sheets of the paper-web and feeding said sheets to a relief printing device which is associated with the device for intaglio printing. The principal advantage of an arrangement of this kind consists in a considerable saving of space. The empty space which is ordinarily present in machines of this kind below the collecting cylinder and the adjustable paper cutting mechanism which forms part ofv the intaglio printing device is utilized according to my invention for the reception of the relief printing device. This arrangements results in an extremely compact construction of the combined int-aglio and relief printing machines as compared with known constructions in which the relief printing device occupies a great amount of space. In addition to this, the machine according to my invention may either be used as a pure intaglio printing machine for unfolded as well as for folded sheets of paper or as a relief printing machine for fixed sizes of sheets or as a combined intaglio and relief printing machine, which operates in a single course of work. I
In the accompanying drawing I have represented a preferred embodiment of a combined intaglio andrelief printing machine according to my invention, the drawing being a longitudinal view of the new machine, several parts thereof being shown in section.
According to the drawing, the paper-web commg from the paper roll 1 is carried by means of a looping and delivery mechanism through the intaglio printing devices 2 and '3, an impression according to the intaglio process being thus made on said paper-web. Thereupon the paper-web is delivered to the paper cutting mechanism 4 which is made adjustable in accordance with the variation of the form cylinders of the intaglio printing device. From the cutting mechanism 4 the cut paper-sheets are delivered to the feedcylinder -5 which immediately co-operates with the companion feed-cylinder 14, thus forwarding said out paper-sheets to one of the two printing cylinders of the printing works 7 and 8 serving for first and second form printing according to the relief principle. In the rear of the second printing cylinder of the relief printing device there is provided in the known manner a feed-cylinder 9 by means of which the paper-sheets are forwarded to the folding cylinders 10, 11 and 12 which serve for transverse folding of said paper-sheets.
The sheets which had been carried through the intaglio printing devices 2 and 3 and the adjustable cutting mechanism 4: may now either be collected upon the cylinder 5 or immediately forwarded to the sheet delivery 6. These sheets may also be singly conveyed by means of the cylinder 5which in this case acts as an intermediate or feed cylinderto the second feed-cylinder 14 which carries the sheets into the relief printing works 7 and 8, whereupon said sheets will be folded upon the folding cylinders 10, 11 and 12. If it is desired to apply relief printing to an endless paper, a second paper-roll 15 may be employed in addition to the paper-roll 1, said paper-roll 15 supplying a paper-web to the cylinder 14. The paper-web will now be printed'upon by the printing cylinders and delivered to the funnel-shaped folding device 13 as indicated in dotted lines in the draw- I claim 1. A rotary printing machine for combined intaglio and relief printing, comprising an intaglio printing device including a collecting cylinder associated with a sheet delivcry, and a relief printing device including printing cylinders, said collecting cylinder being operatively associated with said printing cylinders so as to rmit alternatively operation of said collecting cylinder as such or as a feed-cylinder for forwarding cut paper-sheets to said relief printing device.
2. A rotary printing press for combined intaglio and relief printing, comprising in combination with the intaglio printing machine, a cutting mechanism, a sheet delivery, a relief printing machine, and a collecting cylinder adapted to receivethe sheets from said cutting mechanism and to feed said sheets either to said sheet delivery or to said relief printing machine, the latter being arranged in the space underneath said collecting cylinder and said cutting mechanism.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
OTTMAR WILHELM.
