Be it knownthat I, HENRY A. WisE WooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York in the county of New York and State of llew York, have invented a new and useful Insert Feeding and Cutting Device, of which the following is. a specification. V
This is a division of my application for patent, Serial No. 177,652 filed June 29, l p

This invention relates to the art of printtogether with inserts of one-or more leaves. The principal objects of this invention the above mentioned patent. The invention also involves improvements 1n combinations of parts and detailsof construction as will ap ear. v

vention is produced for the purpose of employing work from the low speed flat presses for the purpose of supplying inserts and of doing so either with or without a sheet of tissue paper. It will 'be understood, of
course, that these inserts may consistv ofa single sheet 1or a double sheet folded once to form a signature of two sheets, or twice to form one of four sheets, etc. 1
In the form shown an insert feeding dedoin a high class of work. These fiat sheets are ed by hand or mechanically from a feed boardg. They may be of from two to sixteen pages, or'even more. They are fed between gages in the usual way to rolls 1 and are controlled by feed gages 2 so that Y the sheets are fed ;forward one at a time along a tape-run wav '3. If tissue sheets are to be introduced, as is shown in-this case; they are supplied with a line of paste by means of'a paste bladewl which moves to and from a paste r0115. The'ti'ssue web 6 is fed at the proper speed to cutting cylinders 7 and cut up into, sheets, and then. fed totapes 8 into contact with the insert sheets.

While 'I haveillustrated and described only one form ofthe invention and of dif- 5O lferent parts thereof, I am aware that many modifications can be made and that as far as most, of the features of the invention are jconcerned, they do not depend upon the details of construction. Therefore 'I do not wish to be limited to the details of con-' struction shown, except asexpressed' in the claims, but whatI do claim isz+ V 1. 2..In a machine of'the character. described, the. combination with means jfor receiving insert sheets of a grooved cylinder for receiving a web, a cutting cylinder having a single knife thereon movable to and from operative position with respect .to the grooved cylinder, a second'cutting cylinder having a plurality of ,knivesthereonmovable to and from operative position with re spect to the grooved cylinder, and means for associating the sheets cut therebywith the insert sheets.

In an insert and tissue feeding device, the combination of a runway for receiving one set of sheets, means for feeding the other web, means for cutting the web into sheets, means for pasting one set of sheets, means for feeding the other sheets into contact with the pasted sheets, collecting devices, means for feeding the insert and tissue sheets to said devices, means for feedinga web from a high speed press to said devices, and a gathering device for receiving signa tures from said devices.

In an insert feeding device, the combination of a runway for receiving the insert sheets, means'for feeding a tissue web, two cutting cylinders either one being adapted to be placed in operative position, each one being adapted to cut the tissue into different lengths, means for pasting the tissue sheets, means for feeding the pasted tissue sheets into contact with the insert sheets,
collecting devices, means for feeding the insert and tissue sheets to said devices,
Vmeans for feeding a web from a high speed press to said devices, and a gathering device for receiving signatures from said devices.
