To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD KAHLER, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Associating Mechanism Between a Press and a Folder, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view showing an arrangement of inking, blanket, and impression cylinders for producing papers of four,
six, eight, twelve, or twenty-four pages; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the press shown in Fig. 1, with the intermediate delivery for accumulating the required number of sections for the product or complete paper and delivering such product to a folder; Fig. 3, a detail showing a sectional elevation of the cutting-cylinders and intermediate delivery for accumulating the sections of a complete four, six, eight, twelve, or twenty-four page paper to be delivered to a folding mechanism i'or further folding operations, and showing also the delivery printing-cylinder in outline; Fig. 4, an outline showing the intermediate delivery and the seriesof leading-tapes running from the cutting-cylinders to and over the first folding-rollers; Fig. 5, a vertical longitudinal section of a press for printing a four or eight page paper,with the intermediate delivery for accumulating the sections between the cuttingcylinders and the folding mechanism for the product or paper produced by the press; Fig. 6, a side elevation showing the intermediate delivery for accumulating the sections for the complete paper or product of the press in conjunction with a folding mechanism; Fig. 7, an end elevation of the folding mechanism shown in Fig. 6. The manner of arranging the plates a a a a a a b b b b b b to print either a four, six, eight, twelve, or twenty-four page paper is fully described in my application Serial No. 122,708, filed March 1, 1884., of which this is a'division, and is therefore not here specifically described, and is only shown for the purpose of illustrating the use of the delivery devices with such cylinders.
O is the blanket or pressure cylinder coacting with the cylinder A and provided with a blanket, c, as usual.
D is the blanket or pressure cylinder coacting with the cylinder B and provided with a blanket, d, as usual.
E represents theink-distributing rollers, one at each end of the press, for supplying ink to the printing-cylinders, the ink being transferred to the plates on the printing-cylinders through the medium of rollers e, as shown in Fig. 2, or otherwise.
Frepresents the ink-troughs, oneat each end of the press, and each having alifting-roller, F, to raise the ink and,through the roller f, transfer it to the roller E, and, as shown, a roller, f,
is suspended by arms f from a rock-sliaft,f, supported in standardsf, extending up from the main frame.
G is a cutting-cylinder, to which the continuous web after being acted on by the printingcylinder B leads, and, as shown, the cylinders B and G are arranged for the paper to pass in a diagonal direction; but they could be arranged for a vertical line or otherwise. The cylinder G (shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is provided with three cuttingblades, g, each located in a slot, and each cutting-blade is mounted in a frame or box, 9', and at each end of each blade a set-screw (not shown) will be provided to engage the end of the blade and hold it in either a projected or withdrawn position, accordingly as the blades are to be acting or non-acting, by which arrangement all three of the blades can be brought into use, or any two of them, or only one. Each blade passes through a head or block, g, set in the periphery of the cylinder, and these heads or blocks 9 also have the respective matrices or slots for the cutting-blades of the other cutting cylinder. The knives or cuttingblades 9 and the matrices or slots g on this cylinder G, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, have a distance between them to correspond to the space occupied by a single clectrotype or plate on the cylinders A B.
H is the cutting'eylinder to coaet with the cylinder G in the form of construction and arrangement shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This cylinder H is smaller in diameter than the cylinder G, and its periphery is provided with two slotted blocks or heads, h, on opposite sides of the cylinder, and in line with each other, which heads or blocks form the matrices or slots h for the blades 1 of the cylinder G, and one of these heads or blocks h has arranged therein a blade or knife, 7!, which can be held projected or withdrawn in the same manner as the blades g, and in use the blades 9 coaet with the matrices h and the blade h coacts with the matrices g to sever the continuous web into sec tions; and the manner of setting the blades as required for cutting different-paged papers is fully set forth in the application Serial No. 122,708, filed March 1, 1884, of which this is a division. The circumference of the cylinder H corresponds to the space occupied by two ofthe plates on the printingcylinders, and each revolution of the cylinder H will divide the continuous web into sections of the width of two plates on the printing-cylinders.
I is a roller or series of pulleys mounted upon a suitable shaft supported in bearings upon the framework of the machine and located in relation to the cutting-cylinders G H to take the continuous sheet of paper from between the cylinders and pass it to the carrying-tapes i.
l is av roller or series of pulleys arranged to return the tapes i back to the roller or pulleys I.
J is a roller or series of pulleys mounted on a suitable shaft supported in bearings on the frame of the machine; J, a roller or series of pulleys corresponding to J. These rollers or pulleys J J are located at the required distance apart for separating a sheet or paper from the continuous web and carry the same around and lay it onto the next advancing sheet or paper and have the edges of the two papers or sheets correspond, or nearly so.
K is a roller or series of pulleys on a shaft which has its bearings 011 the frame of the machine and located over the roller or pulleys J.
K is aroller or series of pulleys mounted in suitable bearings on the frame-work of the machine and arranged to support the continuous set of tapes i at the delivery end of the press.
L is a roller or series of pulleys mounted on a shaft which has its bearings on the frame of the machine and located over the roller or pulleys K.
L is a roller or series of pulleys mounted on a shaft supported in bearings on the frame of the machine and arranged to support the tapes carried by the roller or pulleys L at the (lelivery end of the folder.
The rollers or pulleys J K L are located in close proximity to each other, leaving between them only sufficient space for the travelof the tapes and the sheets or papers gathered and carried by the tapes, and these rollers may be arranged in a vertical line over each other, as shown, or in some other suitable manner.
M is a switch secured to a shaft, M, mounted in bearings on the frame of the machine, which shaft at one end has an arm, M, by means of which and a rod, M, and suitable gearing the arms of the switch can be turned to deflect the papers or sheets as required for accumulating a number of sheets, one on top of the other, and then delivering the entire number, or for delivering separate papers or sheets to the folding devices. The switch M is formed of curved arms at on each side of a central point, Z, which point, as shown, lies within the angle formed by the peripheries of the rollers or pulleys J K and projects sufficiently far into the space between the pulleys to turn the leading edge of the sheet or paper carried by the tapes 1' up or down, as required.
N N are rollers or series of pulleys each mounted on a shaft having suitable bearings on the frame of the machine and so located in relation to the tapes t as to have the tapes 01, which they carry, lie above and in close proximity to the tapes 2, and furnish the means for holding the paper in its passage on the tapes i. The tapes 1' pass from the roller or pulleys I around the roller or pulleys J and around the roller or pulleys K, thence in a slight upward inclination to the roller or pulleys K, thence over the folder to the roller K, and down and around the roller or pulleys I back to the roller or pulleys, so that a single set of inder and delivers thev same to the folding mechanism.
Between the pulleys J J at the top is arranged a series of rods, k, and aseries of rods, 7c, is also arranged between these pulleys at the bottom, these rods k and is forming a bridge between the two pulleys. act in connection with the tapes t to form a "path for the travel of the sheets or papers to pass from the roller or pulleys J to the roller or pulleys J or K, the papers or sheets traveling between the tapes 1' and the supportingrods 70, and the rods k form, in connection with the tapes 2', a path'for the travel of the papers or sheets carried by the tapes to the roller or pulleys J. These rods 70 k are supported by cross-rods or in some, other suitable manner, so as to be stationary, and their arrangement may be different somewhat from that shown, so long as they form, in connection with the single set of tapes 11, the path for the travel of the papers or sheets. The papers or sheets to be folded are carried between the tapes i and j to the delivery end of the press, to pass therefrom to or over the first folding-rollers of the folder, and the tapes 9' pass around the pulleys L L L, their acting parts or faces running parallel with the tapes z.
O is the base of the frame of the machine, 0 standards or posts, and O the top of the frame,which parts for each side may be castin one piece, or they may be formed of separate pieces suitably secured together, and they may be of the form and arrangement shown, or any other form that will furnish a support for the acting parts of the press and paper-delivering devices.
P are journal-boxes supporting the shafts of the blanket cylinders and also the cutting'cylinders.
Q arepcndants projecting down from the top rail of the frame, each pendant having a stem, q, to receive set-nuts 0, by means of which the arm 10, which adjusts the position of the journal-box P, can be moved to bring the cylinders in proper coacting relation. These journalboxes, pendants, and their adjusting devices are similar in their construction, arrangement, and operation to those for which Letters Patent No. 298,859, dated May 20, 1884, were granted to me.
The press when of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 has the plates from which the printing is done'attached to the printing-cylinders, with the column-rules running parallel with the length of the cylinders instead of running around transversely, as is the common practice,
and, as shown, six plates are provided for each 1 end section or half of each cylinder, making twelve to each cylinder or twenty-four for the two cylinders, and from this arrangement of plates a four, six, eight, twelve,or twenty-four page paper or sheet can be printed, as set forth in the application Serial No. 122,708, filed March 1, 1884, of which this is a division.
The rods 7c The cutting-cylinders for separating or dividing the sections of a twenty-fouror a twelve or dividing an eight or a four-page paper are arranged to have the cutting-blades of the cylinder Gwithdrawn and the cutting-blade of the cylinder H projected, in which position a single revolution ofthe cutting-cylinder H divides or separates the continuous sheet or web into sections corresponding to one-third ofthe circumference of the printing-cylinders, each section containing the matter of two consecutive plates on the printing-cylinder; and for dividing or separating a six-page paper the knife on the cylinder His withdrawn and two of the knives on the cylinder G projected, so as to divide or separate the continuous web into long and short sections alternately, the long sections covering the space occupied by two consecutive plates on the printing-cylinders, and the short, the space occupied by one plate on theprinting-cylinders.
In operation, with the plates arranged to print atwenty-four-page paper, in which case the cylinder H will be the male cutting-cylinder, the continuous paper or web as printed will pass from the delivery printing-cylinder B between the cutting-cylinders G and H and will be partly divided or separated by the blade or knife of the cylinder H transversely at a point containing the matter of two consecutive plates,'and the leading pages will pass onto the tapes 1' and be separated by the increased speed as the forward edge of the paper reaches and is taken by the pulleys J. This leading sheet will contain pages 7, 18, 6,
and 19 on its upper side and pages 8, l7, 5,
and 20 on its under side, and will be carried around by the tapes 1' until its forward edge meets the switch, which is turned to deflect it downward and bring such forward edge to meet the forward edge of the next succeeding section, which section will contain the matter for pages 9, 16, 4, and 21 on its upper side and 10, 15, 3, and 22 on its under side, and the two sections of the paper thus brought together will be carried forward together by the action of the tapes 1' until the roller or pulleys J are reached, when the second section willbe separated by the increased speed from the next succeedingsection,andthetwosectionsbrought together will be carried around and deflected by the action of the switch to bring their forward edges to meet the forward edge of the next succeeding section, which section contains on its upper face pages 11, 14, 2, and 23 and on its under face pages 12, 13, 1, and 24 of the complete paper, and the three sections thus brought together will be carried forward by the action of the tape 43 and separated from the succeeding section and carried around and deflected upward by the action of the switch, which is turned automatically for that purpose, and delivered to the folder to be folded in proper shape for handling. The three sections of the next succeeding twenty-four-page paper are taken in the same manner and delivered to the folder, and so on until the required number of papers have been printed and folded.
The continuous web of paper, if ofsufiicient width to extend across the printing-cy]inders in printing a twelvepage paper, will have to be slitted longitudinally at the center as a paper is printed on each half or end section of the printing-cylinders, and the continuous web, after being printed on, passes from the delivery print-ing-cylinder to the cuttingcylinders in the same manner as for a twentyfour-page paper, except in being in two sheets instead of one, and after being carried through the cutting-cylinders and divided into sections by the cuttingblade the three sections forming the first paper are separated in the same manner as already described for the twentyfour-page paper and delivered to the folder, two papers being delivered by the tapes simultaneously in the same manner as printed, and the remaining papers are separated and delivered in a like manner until the required number ofpapers havebeeuprinted and folded.
The continuous web of paper in printing an eight-page paper extends across the cylinders the same as with a twentyiour-page paper, and the paper after being printed passes between the cutting-cyliinlers and is severed into sections, each section containing the matter for a full eight-page paper, and the separated sec tions are carried around by the tapes, but are not deflected and turned downward, as in a twenty-four-page paper, each section being deflected upward and carried to the folder separate one from the other. The continuous web for a six or four page paper, if of sufficient width to extend across the cylinder, is slitted longitudinally, as the end sections or halves of the printing-cylinders are duplicates one of the other; and for a four-page paper the sections are separated in the same manner as for an eight-page paper, as each section contains the matter of a complete four-page paper, and these sections are separately deflected upward and carried to the folder the same as with an eight-page paper. The cutting-cylinder H is the one used for cutting the papers thus far; but in separating a six-page paper the knife of the cylinder H is withdrawn and two of the knives of the cylinder G projected, in which condition the continuous web will be divided by the action of the knives into short and long sections, the short section being the first or leading one, and this section on each side of the paper as it comes from the printingcylindcrs contains pages 3 and 4 of a sixpage paper, and this section of the paper is taken by the tapes 1', carried forward to the roller or pulley J, carried around the roller, being separated, as already described, for a twenty-four-page paper, and is carried forward and deflected downward by the switch M .to overlie the first half of the next succeeding section, which contains pages 1, 6, 2, and 5, and the long section and-short secvin Figs. 1 and 2.
tion of paper thus brought together are carried around by the tapes and rollers and deflected upward and delivered to the folder, and the nextsucceeding short and long section are separated one from the other and from the continuous web, overlaid, carried around,and delivered to the folder, and this operation is continued until the required number of papers has been reached, it being understood that two papers are carried and delivered to the folder simultaneously the same as printed.
The outline Fig. 4 illustrates the manner of leading the tapes over folding-rollers for making the fold in a twenty-four or eight page pa per when printed on the style of press shown The twenty-four-page paper is made up of three sections and the eightpage of oneseetiononly, the three sections for a twenty-four- )age, however, occupying the same space as the one section, asthey are over laid one on the other. The sections are delivered over the 't'olding-rollers R.
The intermediate delivery for accumulating the sections for a complete product or paper can be applied and used with a form of press which produces only an eight or four page paper or product, and such application to a press is shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, said figures also illustrating a folder to be used with the press, and in these figures' A represents the first impression-cylinder, l'iaving thereon impression-plates a, as usual; B, thcsecondimpression cylinder, having in1- prcssion plates 0 thereon, as usual; 0, the blanketcylinder for the impression-cylinder A, provided with a blanket, c, as usual; D, the blanket cylinder for the impression-cylinder B, provided with ablanket, d, as usual, and this cylinder, as shown, is of a larger diameter than the blanket-cylinder O, for the purpose of delivering a continuous web to and between the cntting-cylinders, to do which the ci rcumference ot' the cylinder D must be twice that of the impression-cylinder B, so that the contact of half ot'the circumference will produce the impression, leaving the web free to pass between the cutting-cylinders, and, as shown, the continuous sheet or paper is held in contact with the under running periphery of the impression-cylinder D by a series of tapes, 0, running from a series of pulleys, 0, between the impression cylinder B and blanket-cylinder I), to a series of pulleys, c, on the delivery side of the blanket-cylinder D, just back ol'the cuttingeylindcrs,and properly located for the continuous sheet to pass from the tapes 0 at the pulleys c to and between the cutting-cylinders, and the tapes 0 run from the pulleys 0 back under a series of pulleys, d, to the series of pulleys c, and, as shown, the pulleys d are mounted on a crossshaft supported in arms at from a shaft, d, by means of which the pulleys d can be made to act as tighteners and hold the tapes 0 in proper relation to the blanket-cylinder D for the passage of the continuous web.

The intermediate delivery formed by the pulleys I J J, switch M, and tapes iis similar in construction and operation to the corresponding delivery shown in Fig. 2 andheretofore described, except in the arrangement of the parts to adapt it to the press and cuttingcylinders of Fig. 5.
The frame represented by the letters 0 O O" has an upper portion to receive the first set of printing-cylinders and the lower portion to receive the second set, as shown in Fig. 5.
R represents the first folding-rollers of the folding mechanism, to which the papers or product are successively delivered after being accumulated to form a complete whole by the intermediate delivering mechanism. These rollers are located, as shown in Fig. 6, at the upper end of the supporting-frame and run longitudinally, and are mounted on shafts supported in suitable hearings on the framework,
and are arranged to be in line with the center or'first folding-line for the papers or product.
R represents the second folding-rollers, located below the first folding rollers and mounted 011 shafts supported in suitable bear ings on the frame and running transverse of the machine at right angles to the first folding- -rollers, R, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
R represents the third or final folding-rollers for the arrangement shown, located below the folding-rollers R and mounted on shafts supported in suitable bearings on the frame, so as to run longitudinally of the machine and in a plane parallel with the plane of the rollers R. The rollers R each have running there- -over a series of tapes, r, one series running fromone roller down and under pulleys r, thence across, over, and parallel with the rollers R to a series of pulleys, r, thence up and under pulleys r tothe roller R, from whence they started; and the other series of tapes r run from the other roller R down parallel with the first series of tapes to and under the pulleys r, across to and around a series of pulleys, r back under the rollers R to and around the pulleys r thence up under pulleys r to the roller R, from which they started; and the pulleys r and r can be adjustably mounted. so as to act as tighteners to keep the tapes r taut and in proper running condition to carry the papers from the folding-rollers R to and over the folding-rollers R. The rollers R also have a series of tapes corresponding to r and running over the rollers and operating to carry the papers from the rollers B to and over the rollers R, and these series of tapes are shown by the dotted and full lines in Fig. 6, and the tapes and the rollers orpulleys over which they run are correspondingly lettered for the tapes and rollers or pulleys which lead from the folding-rollers R to the folding-rollers R. 5
S is a folding-lblade having, as shown, a central standard, S, in which is a slot, S, and from which standard, at the upper end, run to the ends of the blade diagonal bars S, these parts S S S being formed from a single piece. The upper end of the center bar, S, is provided with a pin or pivot, s, on which is mounted an anti-friction roller, 8.
T is a disk having in its side face a camgroove, 25, into which projects the antifriction roller 8.
Uisashaft, to which is firmly keyed or otherwisefastened the cam-disk T, so that as the shaft is revolved it will rotate the camdisk T and a cause the groove t to act on the anti-friction zco roller 5 and raise and lower the folding-blade S with a quick and positive movement. As shown, the blade is held in a vertical line by guides S, having grooves s,to receive guidestrips 3 on the support-bar S.
The operation is as follows: The continuous web of paper W passes from the roll over the guide-rod WV, over the smoothing board W, between the impression-cylinder A and blanket-cylinder O to receive the impression r [0 on one side, and thence between the impression-cylinder B and blanket-cylinder D to receive the impression for the opposite side;
thence around under the blanket-cylinder D",
being held up by the tapes c,to pass from the pulleys 0' to and between the cutting-cylinders G H, where the sections containing the matter for four pages of the complete product or paper are successively severed or partly severed by the action of the cutting knife or blade, and the first section containing the four pages is torn from the next succeeding section as its leading edge reaches the pulleys J, being carried by the tapes i, and such section is carried around by the tapes 1' and defiected by the switch M to have its forward edge meet the forward edge of the next succeeding section with which the first section belongs to make a complete product or paper, and the two sections thus brought to- 0 gether are carried around by the tapes 2' until the forward edge meets the bite of the pulleys J, when the second section is torn off, and the two sections are then carried around by the tapes to have their forward edges turned, by the action of the switch M, to pass around the pulleys K and between the tapes 1' j to and over the first folding-rollers, It; and when the paper or product is fully over the rollers the blade S is made to descend by the action of the cam-disk T, and force the product or paper between the bite of the rollers R and tapes 1' to be carried down by the tapes around and over the folding-rollers R, and when fully over the rollers the foldingbladc S for these rollers is made to descend by the action of its cam-disk T and force the paper or product between the bite of the rollers It and tapes 1- to be carried by the tapes to and over the folding-rollers It, and when fully over these rollers the foldingbladc S for these rollers is made to descend by the action of its canrdisk T and force the paper or product be tween the bite of the rollers to be folded,which fold in the arrangement shown is the final fold, and from the rollers It the paper or product is discharged into a receiving-box or other receptacle; and these operations continue for each two sections successively, which form a complete paper or product, until the desired number of papers have been printed and folded. The first delivery, by which the sections for a complete paper or product is accumulated, is placed intermediate of the cuttingcylinders and the folding mechanism, and this intermediate delivery enables the sections for a complete paper or product to bcbiought together without cessation in the forward travel of the sections, and it will be seen that the sections are all carried by the single series of tapes 1' from the time they leave the cutting-cylinders until they are delivered to the first folding-rollers, as when each section passes the cutting-cylinder it is received by the tapes 2' and carried by such tapes to the pulley or roller J, being held down and kept from flying by the backing-tapesn and guiderods 7c, and from the pulleys J it is carried by these tapes 1' to the pulleys J, being held up by the guide-rods k, and after two or more see tions for a complete paperare brought together through the medium of the switch sueh complete whole is carried around over the pulleys K by the tapes 2' and switch, which forms a backing for the tapes while the product is passing around the pulleys K, and from these pulleys K the complete whole is carried over the first folding-rollers by the tapes 1', being held down in its passage by the backing-tapes j, which tapes act to prevent any flying or buckling of the paper, and by this arrangement of a single continuous set of leadingtapes, a double acting switch, a breakingroller to separate the sections from the continuous web, and a backing for a single set of leading-tapes the matter for a paper having a varying number of pages can be readily and quickly divided, brought together, and deliv ered to a folding mechanism.
The outline Fig. 4 is not intended to rep resent a folder, as in practice the product will be delivered to a folder similar to that shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the folding blades and rollers being arranged to suit the requirements of the press.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a printing-press, a single set of continuous tapes leading around a pulley, thence backward over itself and above another pulley, thence around a pulley above said intermediate pulley and in a forward direction, in combination with a series of pulleys arranged as indicated, a bridge between the first and intermediate pulleys, and a switch located between the intermediate pulley and the pulley above it to deflect a sheet carried bythe tapes around the intermediate pulley down upon the tapes again or guide it around the pulley above the intermediate pulley, substantially as described.
2. In aprinting-press, the combination,with the cutting-cylinders and a folding mechanism, ofa set of continuous tapes leading from the cutting-cylinders to and around a pulley, thence backward over itself and above another pulley, thence around a pulley above said intermediate pulley and in a forward direction to the folding mechanism and back to the cutting-cylinders, a series of pulleys arranged as indieated, a bridge between the first and intermediate pulleys, and a switch located between the intermediate pulley and the pulley above it to deflect a sheet carried by the tapes around the intermediate pulley down upon the tapes again or guide it around the pulley above the intermediate pulley, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with cutting-cylinders G H, of continuous tapes 2', pulleys J J, a bridge between said pulleys, and switch M, for enablinga single set of tapes to deflect, overlay, and deliver the sheet or to deliver single sheets, substantially as specified.
4. The continuous set of tapes 1', rollers J J, a bridge between said rollers, and switch M, for forming an intermediate delivery for accumulating a number of sheets or passing a single sheet, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the cutting-cylinders G H, of the rollers I J J K L, switch M, having a point projecting between rollers J K, and curved arms extending partially around the same, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
6. The combination, with the cutting-cylinders G H, of the rollers I J J K L N N, switch M, having a point projecting between rollers JK and curved arms extending partially around the same, continuous tapes 1., passing around pulley J, thence backward over itselfand above pulley J, thence around pul- ICO IIS
ley K and in a forward direction, continuous tapes j, passing down around pulley L, thence forward over tapes 1;, thence over other pulleys and back again to pulley L, and the tapes n, passing around pulleys N N, above tape 75, and back of pulley J, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
7. The combination, with the cutting-cylinders -G H and a folding mechanism, of a single set of continuous tapesfl, and carryingrollers therefor to lead the tapes from the cutting-cylinders to and over the folding-rollers and back to the cutting-cylinders, said tapes passing under pulleys J J and around J, then backward over itself and around pulley K and in a forward direction, a series of pulleys, J, a series of pulleys, J, a series of pulleys, K, a switch,M, having a point projecting between rollers J K and curved arms extending partially around the same, aseries of tapes, j, and
backward over itself and around pulley K andin a forward direction, substantially as for the purpose specified.
