Abstract

379,502. Galvanic batteries. ETCHELLS, J., 21, Park Road, Stretford, Manchester, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Aug. 19, 1931, No. 23400. [Class 53.] A storage battery is provided with a cover comprising a hard rubber portion 2 having soft rubber flanges 3, 4 which grip the upper edge of the container 1. The lugs 7, 8 pass through soft rubber bushes 5, 6. A filling orifice and gas vent are formed by a soft rubber part of the cover 2 which is of reduced thickness and is provided with slits 11 as shown in plan in Fig. 1. The tongues so formed are forced upwards by gas pressure and can be pressed downwards by a funnel for the supply of acid or water. A soft rubber flap 12 covers the slits to prevent entry. of foreign matter. A float 16 having a stem enclosed in a transparent tube 14 enables the level of the electrolyte to be gauged. The tube 14 passes through a soft rubber bushing 15. The cell 1 may be of glass or lead-lined wood and is provided at the lower end with a tray 19 having a hard rubber bottom 20 and an upper surface 21 of soft rubber. A soft rubber flange 22 grips the lower end of the cell. The cover 2 and tray 19 may be large enough to cover a number of cells.
