Abstract

378,499. Gramophones ; associated working with kinematographs. CHURCHER, G. G. E., Woodcote, Castle Road, Salisbury. May 13, 1931, No. 14149. [Class 40 (ii).] A gramophone adapted for use with a kinematograph projector is provided with a friction wheel 16 which is driven at substantially constant angular velocity from the projector and is also traversed radially inwardly of the disc or turntable so that the disc is driven at constant linear speed relatively to the stylus. The drive from the projector may be a flexible cable 20 which drives the friction wheel 16 by bevel gearing. The wheel 16 is contained in a casing 15 which also encloses a centrifugal governor 24 driven by worm gearing 21, 22 to maintain the speed of the wheel 16 and disc constant. The casing is carried by an arm 14 which is pivotally and slidably mounted on a bar 13. The arm 14 also carries a pivoted shoe 31 engaging a track screw 27 which is driven by worm gearing 29, 30 from a friction wheel 28 coacting with the periphery of the turntable. To enable the casing 15 to be moved relatively to the shoe 31, the latter is formed in two parts which are relatively slidable under the control of a screw 37. The driving wheel 16 may be disposed at a part of the disc remote from the stylus, or, when an electric pick-up is employed, this member may be pivoted on the casing 15. If desired, the gramophone motor may also be adapted to drive the turntable, and the friction disc, which is driven from the projector, then serves to brake the disc. The picture film and sound record are marked correspondingly to indicate the points of commencement of reproduction, and the tyre of the wheel 16 is provided with a circumferential mark to facilitate placing the wheel in correct position. If desired, sound may be recorded on a disc driven or controlled from the kinematograph projector as described above. According to the Provisional Specification the friction member need not necessarily be driven from a kinematograph projector.
