Abstract

377,514. Planimeters. HOUNSFIELD, L. H., 3, Durrington Park Road, Wimbledon, London. Oct. 28, 1931, No. 29853. [Class 106 (i).] In planimeters of the Stang " or hatchet type comprising a stem with a tracing point at one end and a hatchet blade or wheel at the other end the tracing point is mounted in gimbals to eliminate the possibility of imposing side forces on the blade and the blade is associated with a needle point to puncture the paper on which the area is set out at the beginning and end of the measuring operation. As shown in Figs. I and II, a frame 1 with a ring-shaped base supports a universal joint 3 carrying the tracing point 2 and one end of the stem or bar 4. The other end of the bar 4 has secured thereto a weight 6 with a blade 5 and a semicircular needle 8, Fig. IV, adjacent the blade. The needle is normally raised above the edge of the blade by its mounting in a spring- controlled push 7. The method of operation is described in the Specification. Instead of a tracing point a spot or cross lines may be marked on a celluloid or other transparent base member on the frame 1. The distance between the tracing point and blade may be varied to suit different units of measurement.
