Abstract

<PICT:0376583/III/1> In a process for the concentration of nitric acid by distillation with steam in the presence of sulphuric acid as a dehydrating agent, the residuary sulphuric acid is reconcentrated in stages by circulating a hot fluid therethrough and the steam evolved from one stage is passed through a superheater also heated by the fluid and then used for the concentration of the nitric acid. Dilute nitric acid is introduced into a column 1 through a pipe 2 and concentrated sulphuric acid through a pipe 3, and the concentrated nitric acid vapours passing off through a pipe 4 are condensed in a condenser 5 and stored in receivers 6. The diluted sulphuric acid leaves the column 1 through a pipe 8 and passes in succession through evaporators 9, 9<1> where the water is evaporated off by hot oil circulated through pipes 14, 14<1> from a boiler 13. The steam evolved from the evaporator 9 is passed through a superheater 10 also heated by the hot oil and then enters the column 1 through a pipe 7.
