Abstract

Progressive evaporators. - In an evaporating system comprising two or more evaporators working under substantially the same pressure, one or more filters are inserted between the stages. For evaporating a liquor consisting mainly of a solution of calcium acetate, with some ammonia and organic impurities, as obtained in cellulosic fermentation, a four stage triple effect apparatus is used. Liquor entering by a pipe 1 is preheated in heat exchangers 3, 4, and is then passed in series through an evaporator 5, a filter 10, and a second evaporator 13; these two evaporators constituting the first effect are heated in parallel by steam from pipes f, 14. Steam and ammoniacal vapours from separators 7, 15 pass through the heat exchanger 4 by pipe 17 to the heating jacket of the second effect evaporator 16, in which liquor from the separator 15 is evaporated. Further evaporation is carried out in the third effect 20, which is heated by the vapours from the separator 21. Ammoniacal vapours from the heating jacket of the evaporator 16 which are condensed in the heat exchanger 3 are of suitable concentration for reuse.
