[Class 146 (iii).] In a fountain pen a valve for cutting off the ink supply is arranged so that it is automatically operated by the replacement or removal of the ink cap. In a piston self-filling pen similai to those described in Specifications 337,794, 337,835, [both in Class 146 (iii), Writing - appliances], and 375,458, a sheath 17 fits slidably about the barrel 1 and is connected by screw threads 16 to the operating head 15 of the piston 11 The ink passage 5 of the feed bar 4 has a conical enlargement 6 intc which fits a valve 23 mounted on a tubular enlargement 10 of the piston rod 9. Normally the valvE is maintained open by a spring 24 between a packing gland 27 for the piston rod and the closed end of the head 15. When, however, the cap 22 is screwed on, the screw threads of the cap grip the sheath 17, and an internal cylindrical pro jection 28 lies about the ink and presses the barrel 1 down into the sheath, thus closing the valve. The cap may be made in two parts 28, 22 screwing together and securing the pocket clip 29 between them.
