Abstract
Benzyl cellulose, such as the crude benzylated cellulose mass, is purified by extraction with an organic solvent having no coagulating action and little or no swelling action on benzyl cellulose, with or without a previous washing with water. As the organic solvent, a mixture of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons is preferred, for example, a mixture of one or more of benzene, toluene, and xylene with one or more of the lower boiling members of the paraffin series, such as ligroin, petroleum ether, white spirits, light paraffin oil, and petrol. Naturally-occurring hydrocarbons containing both aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons may be employed. In examples, the following solvents are used, (1) toluene and petroleum ether, (2) low-boiling paraffins and benzene. Washing with water follows in each case. Specifications 265,491, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c], and 364,142 are referred to.
