Abstract
374,649. Stopping gas mains &c. PASS, E., Station Works, Denton, Lancashire. June 30, 1931, No. 18836. [Class 99 (ii).] In apparatus for stopping gas mains &c., a neck or boss integral with a collapsable stopper or diaphragm co-operates with a plunger-like device with expansible or adjustable packing to prevent leakage of gas. The plunger-like device in Fig. 1 comprises an inverted cupshaped element i with a threaded shank i<1> for the reception of a plate k which compresses the packing in a cylindrical housing a detachably secured to the main p. A sleeve b screwed into the upper end of the housing a and operated by a handle b<1> acts on the plunger-like device i, j, k. A central expander spindle c passing through the sleeve b is threaded at c<3> for the reception of a bracket f<2> to which the upper ends of bow springs d are pivoted and of a lock nut #<4>.The bottom c<2> of the spindle c fits loosely in a tube f, to the bottom of which the lower ends of the springs d are pivoted. The collapsable stopper e, which may be withdrawn into the housing a, has an integral neck or boss e<3> which co-operates with a cavity in the base of the element i and has a " T "-shaped recess in its tyre-like rim e<1> which houses the spring d. The sleeve b and the nuts f<2>, f<4> press the element i and the boss e<3> together.
