374,173. Capillary-action lubricating. BELL, R., 84, Page Hall Road, Pitsmoor, WHITE, H. G., 58, Trap Lane, Ecclesall, both in Sheffield, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych. March 13, 1931, No. 7801. [Class 12 (iii).] Lubricant is siphoned from a chamber 1 in a bearing housing to an opening 4 leading to an absorbent pad 6 in the bush 2 by means of a tubular wick 11 inserted in a tube 10 sweated on to a hollow plug 7 mounted in the opening 4, the wick being doubled back over the outside of the tube so as to depend into the lubricant and the upper part of the doubled wick being encased by inner and outer tubular members 12, 13 united at the top by a ring 14 provided with vent holes 16, the wick occupying substantially the whole of the annular spaces between the tubular members.12, 13 and the tube 10. A felt washer 15 is arranged between the ring 14 and the top of the wick. The invention is particularly applicable to armature and axle suspension bearings of electric traction motors, the chamber 1 in the latter case being disposed on the yoke side of the bearing.
