Abstract
In a process for converting tars rich in creosote into pitch and other products, the crude material is heated for not more than a minute, at a temperature of 400-450 DEG C. and a pressure of 20 atmospheres, the volatile products distilling off on releasing the pressure. The phenol-rich oil mixture comprising the distillate is cracked at the same temperature and pressure and low boiling hydrocarbons formed are separated from the unattacked phenols by fractional distillation. The phenol fraction comprising mainly carbolic acid and the cresols, is further freed p from hydrocarbons by heating in the presence of dehydrogenating catalysts such as finely divided iron. Phenol-poor crude materials may be enriched by the addition of phenol-rich fractions before cracking into hydrocarbons and phenols.
