Abstract
Hydrocarbons of high aromatic content suitable for fuel are produced by passage of gases rich in acetylene at 575-825 DEG , preferably about 700 DEG C., and normal pressure, over aluminium carbide or a mixture thereof with aluminium nitride, and fractionation of the product. The catalyst may be mixed with coke, retort carbon or graphite, which may constitute 30-70 per cent of the mixture and serve for heating electrically. The acetylene may be mixed with hydrogen or hydrocarbons richer in hydrogen. Uncondensed products may be recycled. In an example, equal quantities of aluminium carbide and retort carbon are heated electrically to give a reaction temperature of about 700 DEG C. Products are collected by successive refrigerations, and fractionated yielding benzene, naphthalene and diphenyl fractions.
