Abstract

373,405. Semi-rotary engines. WOLFF, L. J., 4610, Foutenelle Boulevard, Omaha, Nebraska, U.S.A. May 19, 1931, No. 14796. [Class 110 (ii).] A semi-rotary internal-combustion engine comprises a number of toroidal cylinders arranged in opposed pairs having their axes curving concentrically about a common axis upon which pivots an oscillating rocker which has curved arms carrying the pistons. The rocker 41 is supported in bearings on a sleeve 19, and carries pistons 43 at the end of arms 42. A single connecting-rod 46 is pivoted to the rocker on a pin 45 and attached to a crank 14 on a crank shaft 12. The crank shaft has balance weights 16. A cam shaft 50 which rests in bearings 49, is driven at half the speed of the crank shaft by gears 53, 51, connected by a chain drive 52. Cams 59, 60 operate through rollers, tappets, and push-rods 68 through bell cranks to control the opening of the exhaust and inlet ports, respectively. The tappets slide in slots in the peripheries of the cam bearings 48. The push-rods 68 act on rockers 70 which through rocker shafts 57 move arms 36 which in turn open or close the valves 33 in the cylinder heads 27. The valve stems have grooves which co-operate with teeth on the arms 36. A spring 40 bears on each of two lugs 39, which are integral with the rocker arms 36, and holds the valves normally in closed position on the seats 31. The pistons 43 are provided with expansible packing rings 44. To remove a piston a clamp bolt 21 is withdrawn and the cylinder then shifted about the arcuate edges of the frame parts 22 between which a dovetail-shaped base of a cylinder is clamped. Cooling fins 26 are provided around the cylinders and ribs 28 between the cylinder heads. The crank shaft 12 supports a flywheel 18 which rotates partly in an oil well 17. Attached to the cam shaft 50 is a bearing member 55 of the ignition-timing and distributing device 56. A combination of three engines is described in which a single crank shaft is driven by a connecting-rod from each engine.
