[Classes 103 (iv) and 103 (v).] In a vestibule connection for railway vehicles, each buffer plate 13, Fig. 2, is pivotally carried at its centre 14 by a central plunger 12 and at each side is engaged by buffer heads 20, 21 carried by buffer rods 7, 8, so that, when adjoining vehicles are coupled, the side buffers maintain contact between the buffer plates 13 and the face-plates 35, Fig. 5, supported thereon. In order to reduce lateral thrust on the side buffers when the train is on a curve the buffer heads 20, 21 are provided with curved contact faces 27 bearing against plates 18 located in recesses in the buffer plates. The latter are made of a general angle section with the horizontal portions 17 disposed at the level of the vehicle floors, and their normal positions may be adjusted by means of nuts 23 on the rear ends of the plunger rods 12, thus placing the central and side buffer springs under an initial compression if desired. For the purpose of maintaining contact between the upper portions of the face-plates 35 to which the bellows 36 are attached, these parts are similarly pivoted by brackets 48 to control links or plungers 49 fitted with adjusting nuts 51, and are engaged at the sides by abutment blocks 37, 38 mounted on the ends of buffer rods 41, 42. The usual screw coupling is fitted below the buffer plates.
