Abstract
354,448. Locomotives. SKODA WORKS, PLZEN, 37, Jungmannova, Prague. May 31, 1930, No. 16888. Convention date, June 11, 1929. [Class 79 (i).] Each of the underframes of an articulated locomotive is mounted upon a pair of bogies by means of central spherical bearings 5, Fig. 2, while the lateral tilting is controlled by side supports on each bogie in the form of bell-crank levers 6, 8, 9 and 6<1>, 8<1>, 9<1>, the free arms of which are connected by a longitudinal rod 9, 9<1>, Fig. 5. Preferably a corresponding pair of connected supports 7, 71 is provided on the opposite side of the locomotive. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the bell-crank levers are connected to the bogies by ball joints 6, 6<1> capable of sliding movement, and to the locomotive frame at the points 8, 8<1>. The full lines indicate the normal running position of the levers, while the dotted lines diagrammatically represent the displacements which occur when the leading bogie, i.e. the one bearing the supports 6, 7, has reached a curve and the elevation of the outer rail has effected a tilting of the bogie, the rear bogie not having reached the curve. The points of support 8, 81 of the locomotive frame are raised to the sameextent, thus minimizing torsional stresses in the frame, while the angle of tilt is approximately half that of the leading bogie. In a modified construction, Fig. 7, the levers have a sliding connection at the points 6, 6<1> with the locomotive frame and are connected at the points 8, 8<1> to the bogies, the arrangement in this case, when the vehicle reaches a curve and the bogies radiate, effecting a separation of the points 8, 8<1>, elevating the points 6, 6<1>, and thus giving the locomotive frame an additional tilt to counteract centrifugal force.
