Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MINER, a citizen of the' United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook andState have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means of Supporting Face-Plates, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means of supporting face plates and parts senger cars.
connected therewith, including buffer stems and diaphragm face plates in railroad pas- In passenger car construction the buffer stems in the bufiing devices mounted on the car engage the bufiing compression resisting members at one end, and at their other end engage with the face plate. The face plate bears the diaphragm face plate. In this construction on account of the weight of the parts named it has been found in the practical operation of railroad passenger cars that the buffer stems are subjected to considerable wear.
The object of my invention is to remedy this difficulty by providing a simple and efficient means of supporting the face plate and the buffer stems connected thereto. I
accomplish this object by securing brackets to the end of the car body, and preferably near the top thereof, to which rods are pivoted and downwardly extended and pivotally connected at their lower ends to the face plate, the rods serving the function of supporting the face plate, and thereby supporting the forward. ends of the buffer stem.
Inthe accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification I have illustrated, and will hereinafter describe in this-specification, a particular type of car to which the device embodied in my invention is applied, though it will be understood that the same may be applied to various types of railroad carsfand by illustrating and describing my invention as applied to the particular type I do not intend to limit the broad nature is a side elevation of the end of said car body. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail showing one of the brackets and the head of the rod connected thereto. Fig. 5 is a detail showing an end view of the face plate with the supporting rod attachedthereto. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail illustrating the means employed of attaching one of the rods to the face plate.
In the drawings 7 represents a car body, 8 the vestibule thereof, 9 the roof, of which 10 represents the upper deck, 11 the lower deck, and 12 the hood.
13' represents the name plate extending along one side of the'car below the roof thereof, 1 1 a side door of the vestibule, 15, 15 hand-holes, 16 steps, 17 17 vestibule windows, and 18 the end of the vestibule.

The lower ends 21, 21 of the diaphragm face plate 19 are secured to the face plate 22. Above the face plate 22 and resting thereon is the foot plate 23. end plate 22 and .at the rear face 2 1 thereof are the side stems 25, 25 of the bufler, and the center stem 26. phragm cover 27 .is secured between the diaphragm face plate and the body of the car. 47, 17 represent piston rods secured to the upper portion of the diaphragm face plate, the same extending into the vestibule and bearing the piston rod springs 48, L8.
The vestibule dia- Suit-ably secured to the struction, and are well understood.
Secured to the car body at the ends thereof, and preferably'nearthe top of the end of the vestibule, are the brackets 28, 28, to which are pivoted the downwardly extended" rods 29', 29, the same being pivotally connected at their lower ends 30, 30 to the face plate 22. The brackets, rods and means employed ofpivot-ing the same at either end are the same on either side of the vestibule diaphragm cover, and I will therefore de-' scribe one of these members.
The bracket 28 comprises a base plate 31 adapted to be secured, preferably by means; of the bolts 32, 32, to the car body. Forwardly extended from the face of said plate is a pairiof lugs 33, 33 spaced apart to receive the head 34 of the rod 29, the said lugs33, 33 and the head 34 having transverse registering perforations to receive the pin 35, forming a clevis connection between i the bracket 31 and the rod 29. The pin 35 is provided with a head 36 at its one end, and a perforation 37 at its other end to receive the cotter pin 38 to secure the said pin against accidental displacement. At its lower end the rod 29 is providedwith a loop 39, having therein the perforation 40 to receive the trunnion 4:1 of the plate 42, which is secured by suitable means, preferably rivets or bolts 43, 43, to one end of the face plate 22, thus forming a pivot connection between the face plate 22 and the rod 29.
The trunnion 41 of the plate 42 is provided with a perforation 44: to receive the cotter pin 45 to secure the rod 29 against accidental displacement.- The head 84: of the rod 29 is preferably detachable from the said rod, and adapted to be screwed thereon, as indicated at the numeral 46 in Fig. 4 of the drawings, so that the rod 29 may be suitably adjusted.
It will be apparent that the rods 29., 29
through their connection by means of thebrackets to the car body at one end and to theface plate at the other end serve to hold the forward ends of the buffer stems against downward displacement, and thus prevent the wear-of the said'stems, such as occurs when the same are supported ;by means frictionally engaging the said stem, and that the diaphragm face plate and other parts connected thereto above the face plate 22 are held in scribed.-
