Abstract

An acid-resisting asphalt is made from a mixture of bitumen and pure kaolin, i.e. acid hydrated aluminium silicate containing less than 5 per cent by weight of acid soluble metal salts. Acid-resisting fillers such as sand and crushed granite may also be added or the kaolin may contain coarse grains of quartz, mica, &c. Cheap grades of china clay and material from pottery waste heaps may be used if the acid soluble content is less than 5 per cent. In an example 70 parts by weight of clean glass sand, 15 parts kaolin (over 75 per cent passing 200 mesh), 15 parts ash free bitumen are mixed in cookers in known manner.
