Abstract
371,353. Tappet-rods. HAMILTON, R. H., 144, Innes Road, St. Albans, Christchurch, New Zealand. Jan. 19, 1931, No. 1788. Convention date, July 31, 1930. [Class 80 (iii).] A self-adjusting reciprocating rod or tappet adapted to take up slack between driving and driven parts comprises a sleeve 4 and head 5 connected by a torsion spring 9, and a threaded rod 6. It is shown applied to engine valve mechanism. When pushed up by the cam 1 the sleeve is in frictional engagement with the head by means of a tapered end 15, which is freed at the bottom of the stroke when the flange 16 of the head rests upon the end of the valve sleeve 21. The spring may then take up any play by turning the sleeve relatively to the head and increasing the distance between them by means of the opposite threads on the rod 6.
