Abstract

Cyclic ketones are manufactured by heating the oxides of cyclic olefines, if desired in the presence of catalysts of the group comprising surface catalysts, such as pumice or silica gel, acid or neutral metal salts, such as magnesium sulphate or cupric pyrophosphate, which may be deposited on surface catalysts, and heavy metals, such as nickel. The starting materials are obtainable from cyclic olefines, for example by the action of per-acids. In examples: (1) 3-menthene oxide is heated with silica gel to 250 DEG C. yielding 3-menthone; (2) cyclohexene oxide is distilled over magnesium sulphate on pumice, heated to 230-250 DEG C., to produce cyclohexanone; (3) 1-menthene oxide is heated to 250-280 DEG C. with cupric pyrophosphate, producing carvomenthone; (4) 3-menthene oxide is heated alone to 250-280 DEG C. yielding menthone. Other starting materials specified are the oxides of methylcyclohexenes, e.g. 1-methylcyclohexene-3, and of camphene.
