Abstract
A plastic composition for insulating electric cables comprises an olefine polysulphide compound formed by the reaction of soluble polysulphides with methylene bodies, such as olefine dihalides or formaldehydes, preferably in the presence of dispersing agents such as precipitated magnesium hydroxide, as described in Specifications 302,270, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], and 359,000. To facilitate working of the composition, softening agents such as crude rubber, fatty acids, soaps and phenol-sulphur compounds, as well as "sulphur carriers" such as zinc oxide and litharge, may be incorporated in the olefine polysulphide compound. The composition may also include fillers, such as whiting, carbon black, magnesium oxide or carbonate and waxes, together with accelerators and antioxidants, such as diphenylguanidine hexamethylenetetramine and betanaphthylamine. The composition may be annealed, either before or after application to the cable, at a temperature of 200-300 DEG F., preferably 287 DEG F., for a period of 40-60 minutes.
