Abstract

Cellulose solutions and cellulose esters and ethers having little or no colour are prepared from pulp which has been given an additional simultaneous treatment with an alkali and an alkali-stable reducing agent, for example, sodium sulphite or other sulphites, hydrosulphites, sulpho-hydrates, resorcine, or pyrogallol. In an example, unbleached pulp is boiled in a dilute lye containing 0,8 per cent each of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphite, either with or without increased pressure, washed and bleached. The product has an alpha-cellulose content of about 97 per cent. Specification 10604/09, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], is referred to.
