Abstract

Raw, spun, or woven textile materials are softened or delustered by treating them with alkali xanthogenates derived from alcohols or alcohol mixtures corresponding to soap-forming aliphatic or naphthenic acids having more than six carbon atoms in their molecules. The xanthogenates are obtained by treating the alkali alcoholates (or mixtures of alcohols and caustic alkali) with carbon disulphide. They may be employed together with fat solvents, impregnating agents, and other materials used in the treatment of textiles, and may be subsequently decomposed on the fibre, with reformation of the alcohols, by treatment with dilute solutions of acids or acid salts. In examples (1) cloth or linen is impregnated with a solution of cetyl xanthogenate and passed through a dilute acetic acid bath, and (2) the softness or pliability of dyed artificial silk is increased by treating in a bath containing disodium phosphate and an alkyl xanthogenate obtained from the alcohols corresponding to the cocoa nut oil fatty acids; the effect can be increased by subsequent treatment in a bath containing acetic or tartaric acid. Specification 369,978 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the addition of the alkyl xanthogenates to viscose solutions, the higher fatty alcohol being set free in the fibre by the action of the spinning bath, so that a delustred smooth artificial silk is produced. The preparation of xanthogenates from octadecyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, and oleic alcohol is also described. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
