Abstract

369,971. Composition fuels. WHITE, W. W., 1, South Villas, Camden Square, London. Dec. 24, 1930, No. 38835. [Class 50.] Fuel briquettes are formed from a mixture of fuel, such as hard coke or anthracite which will not burn freely in an open grate, and an amount of pitch equivalent to 2-3 per cent in excess of that necessary for use as a binder, and the briquettes are subjected to radiant heat in an atmosphere free from oxygen, and maintained clear by circulation of a scavenging gas. The stoving is effected at a temperature of 400-600‹ C., and may be carried out as described in Specifications 352,556 and 359,476. In order to prevent coherence between adjacent briquettes during stoving, inert carbonaceous material such as coke breeze may be added to the mixture ; iron and manganese oxides may also be added. After stoving, the briquettes may be dipped into a solution of sodium silicate and heated with a Bunsen flame, as described in Specification 352,444.
