Abstract

<PICT:0369514/III/1> An installation for detecting the presence of suspended matter in fluids comprises an electric commutator controlling valves whereby samples of fluid are drawn successively from a number of sources and passed through a common detector. When suspended matter is present a switch operated by the detector disconnects the commutator and maintains all the valves in their existing positions. A visual or other signal may also be operated showing which valve is open. In the illustrated arrangement the commutator g energizes successively the magnets e<1> . . e<4> opening the valves a<1> . . a<4> connecting the several sources of fluid with the detector i. Associated with each magnet are two contacts a<9>, a<10> which are closed when the magnet is energized. The detector comprises a photo-electric cell i<3> connected through a thermionic amplifier 16 with a relay h, which becomes energized when suspended matter passes through the detector. The action of the relay breaks the commutator circuit at g<62>, but the open valve a<3> is maintained open by the closing of contact g<66> which through wire g<67> supplies current to the magnet e<3> through its contact a<10>. The other valves remain closed. The circuit of the visual indicator a<92> corresponding to the valve a<3> is also completed through the corresponding contact a<9>, the wires f<1>, a<93>, and the relay contact a<94>, and an audible alarm g<73> is also actuated by the closing of the contact g <71>. Specification 360,246 is referred to.
