Abstract

368,916. Suction cleansing devices for submerged surfaces. HILLS, B. M. and ROYLES, Ltd., Dalham Works, Irlam, Manchester. Jan. 23, 1931, Nos. 2257 and 29201. [Class 102 (i).] Suction cleansing devices more particularly for use in cleansing the bottom of swimming baths or other submerged surfaces, comprise a nozzle with a transverse opening mounted on a wheeled carriage b and having a squeegee n, mounted within the opening adapted to rest against either of the transverse edges d to form with the other edge the operative suction orifice. The squeegee is pivotally mounted and can be adjusted for height by end screws. Arms connected to the squeegee carry rings o for attachment of tow ropes. A central pipe f leads to the suction hose. The pull on the tow rope rocks the arms so that the squeegee closes the trailing suction nozzle. In a modification. Fig. 7, a squeegee u is mounted on a clamp u<1> the squeegee not being adapted to rock, except by its own flexibility. The suction nozzle f is connected to a hose 17, Fig. 8, and this may be worked by a pump 11. In order to prime the suction piping 17 a 3-way valve 9 at the inlet end of the pump is set to connect to a branch inlet 14 and the outlet 3-way valve 10 is set to connect the pump outlet to a byepass 13. A priming valve 15 connects a funnel 15a to the branch 14 which is easily primed owing to..its short length. When this piping is filled, the funnel is closed and the pump 11 started, and on changing over the valve 15 the pump readily primes itself from the branch connection and delivers water into the piping 17 through the byepass 13. When air ceases to come out of the suction nozzle cover or water comes freely therefrom the valves 9, 10 are changed over and the pump will draw through the cleaning nozzle up the pipe 17 to the outlet 18.
