Abstract
<PICT:0368793/III/1> Alcohol is dehydrated by submitting it in vapour form to a countercurrent of an anhydrous water-abstracting agent capable of being converted by heat from the aqueous state into the molten state without passing through the solid phase, e.g. potassium acetate, the salt being dissolved in absolute alcohol before entering the treatment column or supplied in a fused state to the column where it dissolves in the ascending alcohol. Aqueous alcohol is supplied through a pipe a to a column A heated at the bottom and fed at the top through a pipe b with a solution of anhydrous potassium acetate in absolute alcohol supplied from a mixing vessel C. The dehydrated vapours are condensed in a cooler B and part of the condensate is fed through a pipe f to the mixer C to dissolve the molten acetate. The diluted salt is removed from the bottom of the column and pumped by a pump P to an evaporator E where the water is driven off, the molten anhydrous salt being returned to the mixing vessel C through a pipe w.
