[Class 38 (ii).] Vapour apparatus, arranqements of.-In a grid control system for mercury vapour rectifiers, the grid voltage is derived from two components, one alternating and bearing a fixed phase e relationship to the anode voltage and the other unidirectional, either or both being adjustable in magnitude in order that the moment at which the grid voltage reaches the critical value for ignition may be advanced or retarded. The alternating component is supplied by an auxiliary secondary winding S3 on the transformer carrying the main secondary S1 supplying the anodes b1, b2. The unidirectional component is derived through an adjustable tapping on a resistance g connected between the cathode c and the mid-point of a further secondary winding S2 supplying current to the exciter anodes d1, d2. The conductor h is thus maintained at a potential lower than the cathode c and consequently the grid potentials only rise above the cathode potential when the alternating component exceeds the unidirectional component in value, the time at which this occurs being adjustable by varying the magnitudes of the components.
