[Class 26.] The lower end of the inlet limb 1, Figs. 1 and 5 of the U-shaped siphon is quadrant-shaped and is provided with a flap 4 pivoted to the side of the inlet limb adjacent the outlet limb 13 ; the flap is raised to start the flush by a device such as an L-shaped lever 5, 5a bearing against the underside of the flap at a point disposed within the quadrant-shaped end. The lever 5 is pivoted at 6 about an axis parallel to that of the flap 4, to a bracket 7 on the siphon, and is operated by means of a cranked member comprising an operating handle 8 capable of clockwise or anticlockwise movement and a boss 9, Fig. 1, carrying arms 9a with rods 10, 11 which engage the edges of the lever 5. The siphon is constructed from sheet brass and is shouldered at 13a so that the cross-sectional area of the limb 13 is less than that of the limb 1 above the normal water level. The member 5a is increased in thickness towards the outer end to form a curved surface coacting with the flap 4 near its pivot, while the flap 4 is similarly thickened and is provided with a boss 4b and curved end 4a. In a modification the flap 4 is operated by a rotatable crank connected to a rod vertically slidable in guides fixed to the siphon, the rod having a horizontal member coacting with the flap. According to the Provisional Specification, the pivoted flap is provided with a cam surface coacting with a ridge on the horizontal member of the rod.
