WASTE CONTROL FOR BASINS.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known. that I, IVILLIAM H. Darin, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and;use'ful Improvements in aste Controls .t'or Basins; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make. and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in waste controls for basins, lavatories and the like and particularly to the type known aspop-up waste devices.
One object of my invention is to provide means for lifting the stopper a considerable distance above the waste opening thereby insuring quick and positive drainage. to the bowl.-.'. i
A further object of my invention is to provide means which will act automatically to look the lifting lever after the stopper has been raised and thereby positively sustain the stopper in its raised position until the pull up handle is again operated.

' Referring to the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a view partly in section showing a portionof a lavatory with a device embody ing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail View, mostly in central section, showing the lifting lever locked in its raised. position. Fig. 3 isa similar view showing the lifting lever in its lower position. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing a top plan of the lifting lever anda portion of the operating and locking mechanism. 1
Again referring to the drawings 10 represents the bowl of ala-vatory of the' usual type having the flange or table portion 11 and splash plate 12. In the bottom of thebowl is formed the usual drainage opening 13 which extends down through theboss'M which is .formed integral with the bowl. The bowl may also be provided with the overflow passageway shown at 15 arranged in the usual manner. The upper end of a T-fitting 16, preferably of the globular type, is secured to the boss 14 and the lower end of said fitting 16 receives the end of the waste pipe 17. The stopper for closing the waste opening 13 in the bottom oi. the bowl is'shown at 18 and is of the customary disk type having a stem portion 19 which extends down into the fitting 16.
In the side. connection of the fitting 16 is secured one end of a pipe section 20 and on the other end. of said pipe section is rigidly supported an oblong casing. This casing comprises in general a neck portion 21 which is cylindrical in form and a hollow end or head portion 22, the sides of which are flat and the said. head portion is arranged atan angle to the cylindrical or neck portion. In the end of the head portion termed an opening 23. In the neck portion 21 is fitted a packing gland 24- which carries a water proof fiber packing ring 25. In front of the packing. gland is arranged a snug fitting strong coiled spring 34. This spring is arranged to press against the sleeve 26 which causes the internal flange 27 to engage with and press the spherical portion 30 ot the stopper lifting lever against the packing ring 25 thereby forming a water tight joint. In the upper part of the head portion 22 is pivotally mounted bell-crank. lever 36 the long arm of which extendsout through the opening 23 in said head portion. A link 37 connects the short arm oft-he bell-crank lever with the long arm 31 of the stopper lifting lever.
In the flange 11 of the bowl is mounted a gland or fitting 40 in which is mounted a rod 11. The upper-end ot the rod 41 is provided with a handle or knob 42. An escutcheon 4:8 is preferably arranged over the top of the fitting 40 to provide the usual ornamentation. To the long arm of the bell-crank lever 36 where it projects from the head 22 is secured one end of a rod 441 and the other end of said rod is screw headed. The adjacent ends of the rods 41 and 44L are operatively connected together by a turn-buckle 15.

The long arm buckled and the short arm 31 of the lifting lever is swung down and the long arm 32 engages with the stem 19 of the stopper l8 shoving it up and thereby raising the stopper 18 from the waste opening 13. The short arm 31. of the lifting lever will continue to move down until the end thereof is below the axis of the lifting lever and also the short arm of the bell-crank lever will be below the axis of the bell-crank lever; On the continued movement 'of the short arm of the bell-crank lever the link 37 will straighten out and will assume the position shown in Fig. 2. When in this position it will be observed that the pivoted crank lever.
connections of the link 87 with the short arm of the bell-crank lever and the short arm of the lifting lever are approximately in a straight line with the axis of the bell- The short arm of the lifting lever is therefore locked against upward movement and the long arm, of course, is locked against downward movement. lhe long arm will therefore positively sustain the stopper in its open position until the operating rod is again actuated. When the operating rod is shoved down the long arm of the bell-crank lever is swung down thereby swmglng up the short arm and as the short arm swings up it causes the link to buckle. As soon as the link is buckled the lifting lever is unlocked and as the short arm of the lifting lever is drawn up through its connection with the short arm of the bell-crank lever the long arm of the lifting lever swings down permitting the stopper to move down to its closed position.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bowl having a waste outlet and a stopper for closing the said outlet of a fitting extending down from said waste outlet, a pipe section mounted in the side connection of said fitting, a casing supported by said pipe section, said casing comprising a cylindrical portion and a head portion, a stopper lifting lever mounted in saidcylindrical portion, said lever having a spherical shaped body portion, a sleeve mounted in said casing and surrounding the spherical portionv of said lever, said sleeve having an internal flange at its forward end of less diameter than the diameter of the spherical portion of said lever, a coiled spring mounted in said casing and exerting a constant-pressure against said sleeve, a gland mounted at the opposite end of said casing and carrying a packing ringadapted to bear against the spherical portion of the stopper lifting lever and means for operating said lever.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bowl having a waste outlet and a stopper for closing said waste outlet of a fitting extending down from said waste outlet, a pipe section mounted in the side connection of said fitting, a casing supported by said pipe section, said casing comprising a cylindrical portion and a head portion, a stopper lifting lever mounted in said cylindrical portion, said lever having a spherical shaped body portion, a sleeve mounted in said casing and surrounding the spherical portion of said lever, said sleeve having an internal flange at its forward end of less diameter than the diameter of the spherical portion of said lever, a coiled spring mounted in said casing and exerting a constant pressure against said sleeve, a gland mounted at the opposlte end of said casing and carrylng a' packing ring adapted to bear against the spherical portlon of the stopper liftinv lever, an actuatmglever mounted in said casing at a point above the axis of the stopper lifting lever, a link connecting the adjacent arms of said levers and a rod con nected to the free arm of the actuating lever.
