Be it known that I, EARL G. WATROUS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented ,certain new and useful Improvements in Lavatory Wastes, oi' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closure devices or valves for the drains of basins, wash bowls and the like, and more particularly to devices of this character having pop-upvalves or closures with'means for operating the saine. The objects of Vthe present invention are to provide a device of this char-` acter having novel actuating means for raising and lowering the valve or plug; to provide a spring controlled lever which may be operated by a push rod and which will hold the valve in either'raised or lowered position; and in general to provide such improved 'features and details of construe-1 tion as will appear more fully from the ollowing description:

Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the waste or drain pipe with the valve or stopper shown in position.
The bowl or basin 4 which may be of any ordinary orl preferred construction is provided with the usual waste pipe 5 'having outlet holes 6. This pipe is threaded to receive a coupling and lever supporting member 7 which engages with the lower end of the same and coacts with a washer 8 of suitable material to make a tight closure. The valve or stopper 9 has a downwardly projecting stem 10 which is preferably provided with wings 11 which engage with the waste pipe 5 for guiding the stem. The lower end of the stem 10 has one or more holes 12 which are adapted to be engaged by the inner end 13 of an operating lever 14. This lever has a substantially semi-spherical bearing 15 which engages with a similarly shaped socket 16 in a plug 17 which is screwed into the outer end oi a chamber or projection 18 on the couplin 7. This forms a substantially ball and soc etjoint which may be provided with a bushing 19 if desired to make the joint tight. The lever 14 also has a bearing 2O for engagement with one end of a spring 21 which is preferably of conical form and surrounds the inner arm 13 of the lever which swings up and down within the spring. The base of the spring 21 is preferably seated in a flanged ring 22 which engages with a bearing 23 in the end of the chamber 18. The bearings 20 and 23 are preferably or the knife edge type so thatthe spring will rock freely on the same. The end of the chamber 18 has a slot 24 to permit the vertical movement of the end of the lever. The opposite end of the lever 14 engages with a bearing 25 on a sleeve or collar 26 which ts over the lower end of an operating rod 27. The end of the lever is held in position on the bearing and the sleeve is also secured in adjusted position by means of a set screw 28 which passes through the bearing and engages with the rod 27 as shown in Figure'2. The rod 27 passes up through a guide or supporting member 28 at the top of the basin 4 and is provided with a knob or handle 29 for convenience in operating the same. The rod 27 is preferably bent or offset so that the lower end is somewhat out of alignment with the upper portion. This is done for the purpose of enabling the parts to be used Vwith bowls or lavatories where' the horizontal distance between the axis of the guide 28 and the axis of the valve stem 10 is vari'ed. The parts are shown in Figure 1 in lmade for such shorter distance.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the illustration shown in Figure 1. When the valve is to be opened, the handle 29 is pressed downwardly and swings the lever 14 until the inner end 13 passes the deadcenter, whereupon the spring 21 which has been compressed hy this movement, will expand and will throw the inner end of theV lever upwardly or hold it in raised position. The inner end of the lever acting on the valve stem 10 will raise the valve and hold it in open position. It will be noted that the waste pipe 5 is threaded so asto allow the coupling 7 to be adjusted for bowls having diierent thicknesses at the bottom and the holes l2 in thel valve stem will permit the lever 14 to be adjusted for different positions of the coupling. The arrangement of the conical spring 2l over the.
shapes and styles it will be apparent that this device may bechanged in details otcoiistruction and arrangement oit' parts without departing from the scope oi this invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown and described other than as speciiied in the following claims.

The combination with a waste stopper having a downwardly projecting stein, of a lever pivoted adjacent to said stem and having one end engaging therewith, a conical spring arranged over the lever and having one end engaging' with a bearing on the lever, a iixed abutment for the opposite end or the spring and a push rod connected with the lever for oscillating the saine.`
3. A lavatory waste construction comprising a waste pipe, a valve iitting in said pipe and having a downwardly projecting stem,
a connection threaded to said pipe, a lateral chamber in said connection, a `lever having a ball and socket pivot in the outer end orV the chamber and having one arm engaging with the stem, an overthrow spring in said chamber adapted to act on the lever to hold the lever in raised or lowered position only and means for actuating the lever.
4. A device of the character set forth comprising a drain pipe for a lavatorybowl, a
second pipe threaded to engage with the drain pipe and adapted to make a closure at the bottom of the bowl, a valve for said drain pipe, a downwardly projecting stem from said valve, a spring actuated overthrow lever a'djustably connected with said stem,
